Dual-GPU Question

Thread Starter
I currently use two GTX 285s in SLI
I can only buy one card, so I am leaning towards purchasing a GTX 590 over a GTX 580.
However I hope you guys can clear something up for me regarding the GTX 590.

I understand that it is a dual gpu card, and everyone says that it consists of two underclocked 580s in "SLI". How true is this statement? Is it an entirely different form of SLI as it only fits into one slot on the motherboard?
Or if it really is simply in SLI, will I be able to disable SLI mode and somehow use "one" of those dual gpus?

For example, I recently started playing RAGE, and i noticed that with my current 285s in SLI, the game lags horribly. However when I disable SLI, the game runs very smooth. I have heard that it is a driver issue on RAGE's part, but it gives me some information nonetheless.
If I use a GTX 590, will I experience the same lagging issue due to the card being a dual gpu card? or is it not really traditionally "SLI"?

Thanks in advance.

Fact, It is two of the The GF100's. - well is more of a hardware Sli I dont think you can disable them.

So they are indeed in a traditional sense, in SLI? Such as that games not supporting SLI will definitely not be compatible with the GTX 590?

Any game that doesn't support SLI the GTX 590 will perform as an underclocked GTX 580. Basically a GTX 570.

Very good to know. To clarify, if I were to play RAGE with the SLI issue still going on with the game's drivers, will the game recognize the dual gpu card as a single "570" and run smoothly?

It will still see GTX 590 it just won't utilize both GPUs at maximum. Same concept as running the same game with your current setup.

Games are released so buggy now, that it seems the only way to get the best experience is to wait 2-4 weeks before starting. By then the big titles will be patched and have sli/cf drivers.
It just requires patience, which I don't have ;>) , or a huge list of unfinished games.

you can disable SLi and use only one GPU. RAGE, btw, uses only one GPU but runs on max settings and resolution. while using vsync, i'm getting constant 60 fps and never had less for the last few hours of playing RAGE.
