Make a cheap gaming AMD computer - Page 3

It's an AMD forum but going with a Phenom II platform over the i3-2100 is absolutely failing.

I'm just trying to let the OP know he can get more for his money. The i3-2100 is faster than any Phenom II in gaming.

Say the OP wanted HD 6970s in CFX. Would you terrible advice givers also tell him to get a Phenom II because "it's an AMD forum?"

Anyway, as mdocod said, wait a few more days to see where Bulldozer stands. Then make a decision.
Why go through the time and effort of overclocking when you can buy another processor for the same price that's already faster than what the overclocked Phenom II's?

I know it was a half-hearted statement but I just wanted to repeat the point.

This thread has nothing to do with crossfire 6970's.
If it was, it would be in the AMD- GPU section, and we would be recommending 2500K's and other appropriate CPU's.

The thread is specifically titled 'Make a cheap gaming AMD computer' so of course we are saying get a Phenom II.

If it was called 'Make a cheap gaming computer', then your recommendation of an i3 would be perfectly acceptable.

You can game perfectly well on a single 1080p display with an AMD machine, with the appropriate GPU, which is what the OP wants.

@OP: Look at XD's list of budget AMD builds here:
http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...ce-thread.html
The $500 build gets you a 955, with a 6770, with potential for both Crossfire and overclocking

I just wanted to make it clear the i3-2100 build would cost about the same but perform better for his purposes.

OP id wait a week or 2 for BD to hit the shelves and see how it performs. Minitron is right though id get an i3 2100 or i5 2500k, i3 will easily fit in that budget. Maybe even an i5 2500k. If you have an Inkling for AMD though then get the phenon II 955.

Minitron, if you're so adamant about AMD machines being terrible builds, then why don't you stop coming into the AMD forum and going into threads with AMD in the title? Really it's that simple, if you really think a Phenom II is that bad, which it is not, then stay away from AMD threads. Very simple matter.

To the OP, xd's build is great bang for its buck, stick with it or make modifications to fit exactly what you like. Good luck in your build.

Well why would I post in threads about Intel chips? In these forums people make the mistake of purchasing a Phenom II for gaming, not the Intel forums.

I just want to point out that the i3-2100 route costs the same and performs better than XD's terrible build(s).

Going with the Phenom II would not only give you lower performance, but it would also consume more power and produce more excess heat. Not only that, but you would have to overclock the Phenom II to 4.0ghz to match the performance of the i3. That would involve an aftermarket cooler (not free), a lot of time and effort to stabilize the overclock, even more power consumption and more heat.

i respect what your saying but i would not call xd's builds bad. They are AMD builds. Do you see intel in any of his builds? no. SO. do not call his builds terrible. He was making AMD builds not intel.

This brand obsession thing is stupid. For the same price you can get a much better chip with Intel.

It's like being offered a VW Jetta and a Nissan Maxima and still taking the Jetta because it's you're partial to VW.

This should be a moot point anyways in a couple of hours.

why are you in the VW lot talking about a Nissan, when the customer wants a VW?
