I have this old IBM thinkpad it has a dual core 1.5 ghz 2mb l2 cache processor I'm wondering if this processor would work and if so be an upgrade or be worse. It is a pentium 4 3 ghz 512 mb cache

What Socket is that? List you Thinkpad specification. Even if it has the same Socket does not mean BIOS/Chipset will support it.

I wouldn't put desktop Pentium 4 in a laptop, those CPU runs very hot.
