Bf3 uses all 1.5gb of vram on my 480 so I would grab the 3GB edition.

1.5 is plenty. Most I have seen used on Bf3 is 1100-1300MB, and that is with the memory leak.

i had this same question a few months ago. i was deciding between the msi lightning 1.5gb and lightning xe 3gb 580. i ended up going with the 3gb version because it was only another $70 at the time (i think there is a bigger gap now). i was already in for at least $530, i figured i might as well get more vram even though i only play at 1080p right now. i want to get a u3011 really bad.

With the non optimized beta of bf3, the max vram i used on my 285 is 1.25gb with everything maxed. However I dont have DX11 features so that isnt accounted for. I would expect it to go upwards of 1.4gb.

I would think that the 1.5gb is enough, especially when the devs tweeted that they are working on better memory defragmentation and further optimizations.

For the cost of a 3GB 580 you're better off just paying a little more for the 6990.

EDIT:

Noticed that you're upgrading the computer anyways so why not wait until the game comes out to see how much VRAM it really uses? The 9800GTX will do BF3 fine on medium/high (as you probably know).

A $100 more is not "just a little more".

$170 more compared to the $560 he's already spending on that 3GB 580 is a worthwhile investment considering the 6990 dumps all over the 580.

If he wants to be thrifty then the HD 6970 is a much better buy than the 580s.

Actually for $660 HD 6970s in CFX destroys the 580 3GB for only $100 more.

Thread Starter
I don't want to get a new case & with my water cooling system in my Nine Hundred I'm pretty much limited to a 10.5" GPU, Also with the P35 MB I currently have Crossfire is a waste but I wouldn't be spending the money I am if I wasn't going to upgrade MB, CPU, & RAM before the end of the year.... So I still think I'm going to go with the 1.5 GB SSC for the money, & when I order my new Case, MB, CPU, RAM, I'll order another 580 & run SLI.
