There are a few different core for each client type, and yes they all do different work, but within like clients, for comparison, it is the same work. ex, the P4's would be folding the same stuff as C2Ds (assuming like clients)
Bigadv is already a tiny minority of folders, i highly doubt they are strained for workers in the unicore/SMP sector, since that is the most common client type.
What i am trying to say (this assumes that points directly equate to helpfulness of WU).
P4 is rated at 89-115w, and nets about 600ish ppd if lucky.
a GTS 450 is about 100ish watts (for comparisons sake; the same as P4), and will net 5000+ PPD.
The helpfulness per watt is MUCH greater with the 450, and costs are about the same.
With bigadv, the difference is even more noticeable.
Overclocked 2600K is no more than about 160w, but nets 50000 PPD
See where i'm going with this?
My suggestion would be to take the ~$200 you plan to sink into these, and buy a pair of GTS 450s, or some second hand 1366 i7+board.
If you still really feel compelled to fold unicore/SMP for some reason, i suggest you get the fastest processor you can, as it will likely be the most efficient as well.
As much as I am "for the cure", i am also "for the conservation of natural resources" and not foolishly squandering them on inefficient protein folding.
You really have to strike a compromise between helping disease, and helping create a planet that we can inhabit, and determining where that compromise is, is up to you.
