5870 Crossfire help needed

Thread Starter
Got me a second 5870 and having low FPS in crossfire mode in BF3.

My PSU is rated for 50 amps on single 12v rail.

I used several tools including MSI Afterburner and when I tested each card separately, they each got 100% usage in BF3. When I put both cards in, I only get around 55-60% usage from each card. CPU usage around 85%.

When I tested the crossfire setup with 3dMark, i got both cards to go up to 100%, but CPU usage was around 20%.

I just can't figure it out, is the PSU? I'd like to figure it out before spending $200 on a PSU.

My thinking is that PSU can deliver enough current for 2 cards without CPU, but with CPU almost at full throttle in BF3, it's not enough.

I also tried 3 different drivers and BF BC2. Same results.

Thanks

It's not psu. If it was psu, you computer would be turning off intermittently. What games are you playing, what benchmarks are you using. Also make sure you have the latest AMD driver for the 5870.

Try install latest CAP1 11.9 (Catalyst Application Profile to engage Crossfire).

Tried all of the above. Started with 11.9 with CAP1, then 11.10 first release and than 11.10 v2. Still nothing.

I am playing BF3 beta. I also tried Bad Company 2. The only time it goes to 100% on both is when I run 3dMark.

Here's one thing i learned, swap places of you video cards. I learned that will kick crossfire in sometimes even though it is already enabled.

Crossfire doesn't work that way. The scaling depends on the game to peg the GPUs and CPU processing. They all don't have to be on constant 100%.

your CPU might be the bottleneck (especially with crossfire) start overclocking it. It would definitely help.

CPU is overclocked to 3.8GHz
Based on the benchmarks for BF3 beta that I have seen CPU is not the bottleneck. They have run benchmarks with 6950 CF and are getting great frame rates.

It's your CPU, AMD's are terrible for dual-GPUs. But if you want to check for yourself...

Load up Caspian Border with Afterburner and Task Manager open in the background. Play for a bit then tab out and check your CPU usage and GPU usage.

100% CPU with less than 100% GPU means your CPU is a bottleneck.

I am sorry, but that is such a fan-boy thing to say. Have you seen the benchmarks? There is no difference between i7 and 990BE at higher resolutions, so stop trashing AMD processors.

It's been benchmarked and proven that BF3 is not CPU limited. My CPU runs around 80% when I play BF3, my GPUs are at 55%.

My system is very close to some of the systems used in BF3 benchmarks. I get the right FPS with single card solution, but not with CF.
