Titanium HD How do I get Alcemey working?

post #1 of 11

I just picked up a Titanium HD at best buy and I installed the drivers and control panel but I can't seem to find a working download for Alchemy. Oddly unlike with the xtremegamer that i had Alchemy isn't even listed on the support page for the Titanium HD. I'm pretty sure that I still need Alchemy to get EAX working in a lot of older games.

A version of Alchemy is included on the CD and it works quite well.

You can do a selective install of just alchemy if you wish.

The list of games that work with Alchemy are located here:

http://connect.creativelabs.com/alchemy/Lists/Games/AllItems.aspx

For games that list their registry settings rather than their directory path, you will need some modifications if you are on a 64 bit operating system.

If you are on a 32 bit op system, you would have this for Call of Duty 2:
RegPath=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Activision\Call Of Duty 2\InstallPath

For a 64 bit operating system, you would have this additional change:
RegPath=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Activision\Call Of Duty 2\InstallPath

The game will be detected by Alchemy automatically if you have it installed before Alchemy is installed. Then you simply edit the entry with the Wow6432Node addition and it works perfectly.

I used ASUS' DS3D 2.5 and Auzentech's C-Media Xear 3d and they both sound terrible and hollow. Creative's Alchemy will give you the best sounding and most compatible choice for EAX games.

I tried to install Alchemy off of the cd that came with the card and that didn't install. An error popped up.

The Titanium HD isn't even listed as supported on the Alchemy page for some reason.

You will need to have the drivers and applications installed in order for Alchemy to work. If you just installed the drivers off the CD or windows update and nothing else then Alchemy will not work.

There are services installed under Windows 7 and Vista that are activated when the applications are installed. Everytime Alchemy is used, the services start with it.

Don't use Alchemy. I don't think you'll notice a difference anyway.

What is Alchemy anyway?

Alchemy is an application that intercepts the older Direct Sound 3d hardware calls and translates them to OpenAL to restore hardware accelerated sound.

Creative was the company that originated the technology to add additional environmental audio effects (E A X) through hardware (and later software emulation) to games. Without EAX you get simply stereo playback. With EAX, you get surround, reverberation, and occlusion types of sound effects added during playback.

Games had to be specifically coded for EAX in order for Creative's cards to be able to play these "extra effects."

That did the trick, thanks. thumb.gif

You got it. I learned the in and outs of Alchemy two years ago, so if you need help configuring an older game, feel free to ask.

I had always wondered why Alchemy never seemed to mention a lot of EAX supported games until that post you made about needing those games installed before installing Alchemy. What would you do about a game that you installed afterwards?

I also heard that there is a way to install whatever Alchemy does manually but I've never tried it, sounds like it could be useful.

I never know that Titan Quest supported EAX. I'm going to have to play around and see the difference. I love that game.
