Look at the GPU-Z and tell us if it says Cayman or Antilles? There have been now multiple confirmed owners in the Sapphire Club who are seeing Antilles on the 6950 Dirt 3 cards and all have been unlockable.

Seems Sapphire may have run out of Cayman and using the Antilles version which are laser cut boards as to disable the shaders.

Post back and let us know. As for unlocking the Cayman's - there is a unvalidated percentage chance of success as not all can be unlocked anyway.

Chances seem to run about 33-40% ... which honestly isn't too bad ... only a couple cards appear to have better Un-Lock rates, the TOXIC and the MSI OC/PE TF3 ... but both of those cards are about $50 more than your DIRT3 card, so I'd say it was worth the risk you took.

Now to un-lock it ... you have one of the few cards that has a Dual Bios SWITCH on it, and some report they have actually ended up having the HD-6970 as the SECOND BIOS on the card. Personally I don't know I've heard MORE people say it's NOT and it's just a HD-6950 Bios w/ unlocked shaders and then you'd still have to OverClock your DIRT3 card to bump up the Core Clocks and Memory Clocks to 6970 levels.

But step 1 is with your system up and running open up CPU-z or TriXX ... both are FREE downloads if you don't have them, TriXX on Sapphires Website, CPU-Z do a search it's all over.

Now everything is running check TriXX / CPU-Z to see what your shaders are, most likely 1408 ... now SAVE your original BIOS to a file, TriXX has the button, CPU-Z is a little Green CHIP looking icon to click on.

You save the BIOS just in case something goes wrong and you need to reload the factory BIOS again.

NOW IF it says you have 1536 shaders already STOP don't do ANYTHING you're card ALREADY CAME UN-LOCKED. Lucky YOU.

But otherwise, if 1408, save bios, then power off your system.

Find the little DUAL BIOS Switch, should be up top near the X-Fire bridge, and flip it to position #2.

Turn your system back ON.

RE-Open CPU-Z / TriXX and see what it says for the shader count now ... hopefully it tells you 1536 now, and if it does CONGRATS your card has UN-LOCKED. also check your Core Clocks / Mem clocks, most likely they're still 800 / 1250 MHz and you can either OC your card to reach TRUE HD-6970 levels or you can TRY to HARD FLASH it ... personally unless you feel comfortable doing a HARD FLASH, I'd just try to OC it, because you CAN BRICK your card.

NOW should your TriXX /CPU-z tell you 880/1375 MHz though ... WOW you do have a 6970 BIOS on your card, VERY LUCKY YOU ... and you can either STOP as is ... because you have a TRUE 100% running HD-6970, or you can try and OverClock it even more if you choose.

GOOD LUCK

Klinkey,

It's NOT GUARANTEED to Un-Lock !

Hate to say you might be one of the 60-67% that have one that will NEVER Un-Lock as the GPU has been LASER cut, and no switch, no flash, no nothing will change that for you unfortunately, SORRY. But don't be too upset, the HD-6950 is still a great card, and you can Over Clock the DIRT3 card pretty far usually and match the gain you would have had from Un-Locking ... you just won't get BOTH the Un-Lock AND the OverClock.

Slim to none =)

only rev1 pcb with the amd logo on the pcie connector unlocks 100% to 6970

like this , with dual bios switch ..

vs

Everyone seems to think that if they go buy a 6950 that its going to unlock , not the case .. If you rewound time to december 2010 and bought yourself a reference 6950 it will unlock to a full 6970 guarenteed .. like mine

The new revision pcb's dont unlock , they stopped this ages ago ... if you want a 6970 , buy one instead cos a dirt 3 edition 6950 is not unlocking .. not for that price

LOL ... it's slightly better than SLIM to NONE ... but your point is still Valid that to really get a 100% Guaranteed 6970 ... frankly is to buy a 6970, not even 100% of the Rev1 Reference cards Un-Lock, only like 99.9%

and the DIRT3 card HAS the DUAL BIOS switch too BTW ... several Non-Ref cards do
