FERMI is the name of the architecture given by NVidia. In other words the name for the design of the board layout.

AMD has 'Cayman' cards 6950 & 6970, 'BARTS' 6870 & 6850, 'Achilles' 6990.

Those cards are based off 40nm fabrication. Which is 40 nano meters.

Next gen cards for Nvidia are 'Kepler' and AMD has 'Southern Islands'.

These next gen cards are based on new 28nm fabrication. The newer cards will be speculated anywhere from 15%-30% better performance and known fact is it will consume less than 50% power consumption to run than current 40nm cards.

Hope this helps clear up some of the GPU lingo you may read around these boards.

Edited to add: Oh and btw just noticed.....Welcome to OCN

Why not spend $170 more and get a HD 6990 or $140 more for HD 6970s in CFX. It obliterates the 580.

Not the best fan of amd drivers. Ive read some benches and it seems the 580's win in most compared to 6970's. Its not just like your spending 170 more because i still have tax on top of that. This is when i when i wish i could have a native tax free card!!
