FERMI is the name of the architecture given by NVidia. In other words the name for the design of the board layout.
AMD has 'Cayman' cards 6950 & 6970, 'BARTS' 6870 & 6850, 'Achilles' 6990.
Those cards are based off 40nm fabrication. Which is 40 nano meters.
Next gen cards for Nvidia are 'Kepler' and AMD has 'Southern Islands'.
These next gen cards are based on new 28nm fabrication. The newer cards will be speculated anywhere from 15%-30% better performance and known fact is it will consume less than 50% power consumption to run than current 40nm cards.
Hope this helps clear up some of the GPU lingo you may read around these boards.
