Question about Boot Camp

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I had a question on a mid-term regarding boot camp. The question was as follows:

Quote:
True or False: Boot Camp is a utility that allows you to run Windows and Mac OS X at the same time
I answered false, because it doesn't allow you to run Mac OS X and Windows at the same time. I got this question wrong, so I e-mailed my prof about it. this was the response I got:

Quote:
Hi like30ninjas:

Bootcamp allows you to run a windows program via the Windows operating system at the same time as your MAC OS is operating so the answer is true. Sorry

John
I'm pretty sure he's wrong and i'm right. And this was the only mark I got wrong on my test, and I'm willing to fight this if i could, just to make a statement to prove I'm right -- if I AM right.

So my question is: am I right or am I completely wrong??

It allows for both OS's to be INSTALLED at the same time. Once you choose whichever OS, you are booted into your choice and are unable to access/"boot" into your other installed OS.

I would fight it. Goodluck!

Edit: reading up on newer versions of Boot Camp currently

Edit2: yeah, its just installation, it does not emulate or run a VM through OSX

Here is one source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot_Camp_(software)

Here is a second: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

So, based on what I have read from both sources this just seems to allow you to use one or the other in a duel boot situation just as if I was doing the same with Linux and Windows.

I have never used the program and don't do a lot with Mac's so I am no expert. Only going by what I have read and seem to understand about it.

Thanks. I'm going to be persistent with this, it seems like such an obvious answer to me, I'm going to fight it and make sure I get it. I can prove the question wrong in more than one instance, so hopefully I'll get the mark.

You are right, but so is he. I'm an IT Tech and work on Bootcamped iMac's everyday. You select which operating system you wish to boot and then run with that. If you want to run the other operating system a reboot is required. Yes both operating systems are installed at the same time, but it sounds like your prof is being a bit of a douche.

Bootcamp is basically just dual boot for a mac.

good case. but honestly your going to have issues trying to fight it and will be dealing with a mad teacher. you might have to go over his head to actually get something done with it, and that will make it even harder on you.

parallels allows you to run windows applications seamlessly inside of OSX... hmm.

I know I'll have to go over his head. I don't mind pissing him off considered I've already handed in the full semester's worth of assignments a month ago (it's a first-year intro to computing course, we had 4 assignments on Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Access, the exam is scantron/multiple choice and so are all of his mid-terms. There's no real risk of him bell-curving my mark without hard evidence).

I'd like to know how he's more correct than I am, when I say that Boot Camp doesn't let you run multiple operating systems at the same time. His response was kind of vague, and I'm not going to let him dismiss me so easily.

you can hard reference different sources, and explain that bootcamp allows you to chose an operating system to boot into. also, reference parallels so he doesn't see himself as completely being wrong, as there is something for what he is thinking about.

It all comes down to interpretation of "same time" and "running"

The truth is the teacher has clearly worded the question very poorly.
