New to overclocking - i7 950 - Page 6

Also man, because you're Aussie like me, make sure you've got adequate cool air. Especially around Summer. Consider both the airflow and the temperatures near your computer. I don't know about you but I live in WA where ambient temps can get all the way up to 45 degrees.

Yeah same. I live in Perth. Does the ambient temperature affect the CPU temperature a lot?

Yeah, it has alot to do with it. Having case fans to keep the air inside your case moving helps, but if your in a warmed environment and your room temp is high there is only so much you can do...

To improve temperatures, getting a second fan for my hyper 212 would help?

the 212 is not a good cooler for i7 900 series.
a venomus x or somthing like that would do far better
70C is way too hot.

Most likely going to buy a Rasa RS360 now that I know that I have been looking at the temperatures all wrong. I changed the TJ max in Real Temp to 90 thinking that the program will alert me once I reach 90 C. But that also decreased the temperature displayed by 10 C. My temperature isn't 68 C, it's 78 C on load at 3.82GHz.

im quite new to it too and i noticed your ram and vcore voltages are lower than mine are stock, i was under the impression you raise these when oc'ing?

like the way i read was: up the bclk 1-2 steps at a time till you get bsod
go to bios then enter the last stable bclk, reboot then do that again.
untill you cant get higher without bsods then you had to up the voltage?

maybe i got it all wrong tho thats why im asking

i didn't know about lowering the tj max lowers the actual temp as well...that just doesn't make sense...anyway...

to be honest, 78'c with your overclock ain't bad, considering your cooler with only just 1 fan! i said it before, stress testing in ibt is nothing like real world computing, the sort of temps you get in ibt will be a good 20+'c higher than what you would get from daily use, unless you fold...

from gaming to cad, to cfd, i've never actually seen my temps go above 55'c...

yes adding another fan on your 212 will help, probs not a lot, i'd say perhaps you'll see 1 or 2'c lower at idle, and 3-4'c lower at load

upping the volts while you up the mhz is true, but to get the most out of your system you should find the minimum volts for your desired mhz...

bottom line is the default volts is much more than what you actually need to run the chip at stock speed. i think when i first got my chip, the default vcore was something like 1.26v, and qpi/dram was 1.3v. after messing about, i realised what i really need to run my system at stock speed is 1.05v vcore and 1.225v qpi/dram.

but i'd suggest you stick with 1.65v when it comes to memory sticks

Ah OK.
I read a review here: http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/c..._h100_review/1 . Seems the H100 has a similar performance to the RS360. If you put the H100 into a push/pull config, they would be a couple of degrees off each other? If this is true, I might get the H100 as I'm only 16 years old and have limited money
