What was the deal with Al Gore announcing something about the iPhone 5? Was he just massively misinformed, or did people just take what he said out of context?

I'm thinking that's where the big hype for the 5 started.
I don't remember what he said. But I know people started expecting a redesign when they saw the prototype, and he may have even read that rumour.

From what I'm seeing in articles, he basically said that he iPhone 5 would be released in October. Everyone believed it because he is an Apple board member.

Gore actually said "S". As is shipping iphone(s).

The "news/rumor sites" spun this to be a iphone 4 and a ip5.

They are shipping new phone(S) ip4 (8gb) and the flavors of 4s are all new.
Code red, do you know what obsolete is? Your iphone just got upgraded to ios 5. It is by definition... not obsolete or part of any "planned obsolescence"

If not having Siri makes your phone obsolete, then EVERY phone ever is now obsolete, (including every 3gs, and ip4 Apple will be selling in late 2011, 2012)

There's a feature you want, then pay for it. Or pirate it. "It's still a feature"...

Do you get mad at airlines because they charge more for 1st class? Same thing.

For the longest time, I thought Apple might have turned a slight leaf, and I had squeaked past without being screwed over by Apple's typical planned obsolescence schemes. WRONG.

If I have to go through that much trouble, I'll wait until an Android phone has the same capabilities and get rid of my Apple phone altogether.

This is actually exactly what planned obsolescence is in the technology world.

A device may still work well, but features in the newer device render the old device "obsolete." Doesn't follow the strictest sense of the word, but it's true to form.

Every time Apple releases a new iPhone, their goal is to perpetuate the idea that the old iPhone is now outdated, and that you need to get the new one.

Does it work every time with everyone? No, but generally they are very good at it.

It doesn't follow any definition of the word obsolete. Or "planned obsolescence"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence

Sector Nine if you have to redefine common words with established meanings to make a point, your point is bull-o-ney.

Adding Siri to a 4s is what we call... Adding features to a product. The consumer is free to decide what value they place on the product upgrade.

No-one can possibly make an argument Apple or consumers feel that the ip4 is nonfunctional, out of date or non desirable. It's a current model that ships with ios 5.

Planned obsolescence.

I'm not going to get into a semantics argument with you. If you don't believe that with every iPhone their goal is to make the previous models more and more obsolete, then that's fine. Say it, and leave it as such. Insulting people gets nothing done.

Just keep in mind that this is a business, and obsolescence is what makes new products viable.

The older phones were never capable of doing what the 4s is doing now. Even if you had the siri app.

The older phones are current models and will be selling everywhere in the world, even in 2012. Running ios 5.

By trying to take part of the definition "out of date" and trying to say that is the actual definition you are clearly grasping at straws to buttress your argument.

ob·so·lete   [ob-suh-leet, ob-suh-leet] Show IPA adjective, verb, -let·ed, -let·ing.
adjective
1.
no longer in general use; fallen into disuse: an obsolete expression.
2.
of a discarded or outmoded type; out of date: an obsolete battleship.
3.
(of a linguistic form) no longer in use, especially, out of use for at least the past century. Compare archaic.
4.
effaced by wearing down or away.
5.
Biology . imperfectly developed or rudimentary in comparison with the corresponding character in other individuals, as of the opposite sex or of a related species.
verb (used with object)
6.
to make obsolete by replacing with something newer or better; antiquate: Automation has obsoleted many factory workers.

I am not grasping at straws, you are failing to understand what I am saying.

You are using the term "planned obsolescence" like it is an immediate and sudden thing. The time it takes for something to become obsolete is irrelevant. It could be over years, it could be right away.

Simply put, every release of an iPhone, is another step forward in their plan for obsolescence. If they do not do things like making Siri exclusive to the newer phones, there is no incentive to upgrade. As it stands, for most people the hardware upgrades are simply not enough of a reason.

What dictates "obsolete" is in the eye of the beholder.

Semantics!
