New Graphics card needed .. where to start??

Hi guys,

Got informed about this forum by a random teamspeaker in a random server anadalite.

I've been looking around and thinking for ages what to put in my new and first custum built pc.

I don't want to spend more than €250 (340 USD). And I want to get the most out of my pc with that money. I don't want to have to upgrade in the coming two years; as this new pc has cost me, a poor student, enough ;o).

Don't mind looking at second hand hardware (as long as it was taken care of, and not been drastically thrown about (OC'ed and literally); naturally).

As you can probably see (in my sig, I hope it worked) what my computer is; I really need some help on the graphics card issue I have. Given the fact that my current (from an old family pc) doesn't suffice at all ='(. (reason i OC'ed this thing, is because its worth nothing, so i just took a risk and played with it, have never OC'ed anything before)

I stand open to any options giving me the most 'bang for my buck' so i can play BF3 and alot of other (future/past) games as good as it can given my budget.

Hope you guys can help me out!

Thanks in advance,
Sander

I've tried to look at benchmarks, but hardly any are done with my cpu. Does this make any difference? I read alot of different things on this forum as well, that do not make sense as to what others are saying.

excuse my enormous noob level. Hope you guys can take the time to fill me in on the what and what nots. Or even point me out to a good thread, (with my pc set-up in mind).

Cheers

The only issue with older cards like that is that you would probably need to upgrade in two years. A single 6950/70 would perform well for what you want, or you could go for an Nvidia 570. Both cards scale better in CF/SLI and would hold you off for a few years (Unless games suddenly break a hindering barrier.)

EDIT: Any brand would do, I go for Gigabyte, MSi, or Sapphire on AMD cards. For Nvidia I would go EVGA or Zotac.
(Of course any brand should be fine, never liked Sparkle cards though :\\)

Issue with buying 2 older cards to equal the performance of a single newer gen card would be if 1 of the 2 fails, then you're stuck with 1 card that probably won't cut it. With a single new card, you will at least be protected for 2-3 years with a warranty, depending on which manufacturer you choose. That's where I'm at right now, I bought a used gtx470 to add to my existing gtx470, but it died, now I have no way to RMA it, and i'm stuck with one gtx470 for BF3, not what I was hoping for Now I'm going to wait until the next gen GPU's come out next year to do anything because I've all ready spent too much $$ on video cards for this year.

Another issue with 2 older cards in SLI, or crossfire is the extra power consumption. I'm not sure the TDP of 2 gtx 280's, but I would imagine a single HD 6970 would be considerably less. Not to mention when you stack 2 GPU's on top of each other there is extra heat generated.

Go with a single hd6970, or gtx 570, either one is fine for 1080p gaming on high settings, and you'll have less headaches.

gtx 560 ti cards (all 1gb)
Zotac GeForce GTX 560 Ti AMP (€230)

Hi guys. Bought the Sapphire Dirt3 Edition.
The baby turned out to be flashable to 6970 shaderclocks.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the help!

Cheers!
