Backing up HDD? [solved]

This might sound like a noob question, but I got a 500GB HDD for my PS3, I haven't installed it yet I want to copy all of the data that is on the PS3 HDD right now. I don't have an external HDD, can I take out the PS3 hard drive, plug it into my PC, copy everything over on to my C: drive. Then take the new HDD plug it into my PC, copy all of the PS3 data onto the new drive and then put it into the PS3?

The new HDD isn't exactly new. It is from my sisters laptop, there is some information on it that she wants to keep can I copy the laptop (500GB HDD for my PS3) onto my C: drive as well.

There is roughly 80GB worth of data on my PS3 and 30GB on the laptop drive I only have 3 4GB USB memory sticks so there isn't enough on them to back up everything at once, that is why I am asking if the first paragraph can be done.

Also what does the new HDD have to be formatted to FAT32 or NTFS or other? If other what format?

By the way the new Hard drive is a WD Scorpio Blue 5400RPM I have already looked on the internet and people say it will work in the PS3.

Im not sure that you can just copy the files like that as the ps3 probably uses a proprietary format just as the xbox 360 but there probably are plenty of free apps to read the PS3 format. you probably could take the old drive use the filesystem browser to get the files then format the new hdd with the ps3 then take the newly formatted drive and transfer the files on to it via that filesystem browser used before. you also will probably need to rehash the files with modio because the ps3 will generate a new hardware ID with that new drive.

OK thanks. I did manage to back up with 500 GB HDD, I just plugged it into my PC and I could copy the files over from D: to C: so I don't have to worry about that. I also found out a few minutes ago that my dad can get an external HDD so I will just use the back up facility on the PS3 to copy the files and game data over. I will also have a look at these free apps you are talking about anyway
