AMD convert needs an OC'd Folding/Encoding rig.

Rig will be my overclock toy in addition to SMP Folding 24/7, and transcoding alot. I dont PC game but might play with a GPU later. Pretty sure I will never SLI/Xfire. I sold off my Athlon II rig and have been waiting for BD but it's not looking good over in that camp, so doing my homework here.

HDMI output is a must, as well as legacy PATA/IDE supoort. Other than that, I'm pretty open minded. Like I said, it'll be my overclock toy first, then I'll be keeping it going full-throttle pretty much all the time.

I want an i7 2600k, so...

I need:

PSU
MoBo
RAM
A cooling solution.

I have no idea where I'll be budget wise, lets just say ~$600 right now, counting the CPU.

Disappointing stuff BD, but you should still wait 'till tomorrow to see the official benches.

Here's my take:
*Corsair 400CX 400W PSU - more than enough for the 2600K @100% & OCed; get the 500W is the dGPU is coming soon and is in the 200$ range
*Cooling - I really liked the HR-02 Macho review (click) ~40$, CM Hyper 212+ is an oldie but goodie for cheaper
*Motherboard - I think you need a Virtu Z68 board for two reasons - if you transcode you should use QuickSync so you need the iGPU (Z68 & H67) and for OC (P67 and Z68); Virtu would be a bonus allowing you to transcode on the iGPU and game on the dGPU when you'll buy one. Can't say which board to get as it depends on budget, but you could start looking here: click
*RAM: any 4x4GB DDR3 - 1600 kit, the cheaper the better; 16GB is overkill, but it is cheap for now.

cheers

Get ASRock Z68 Pro3 if you are sure you'll never use SLI/Crossfire.

Don't go cheap; your usage really necessitates quality parts...

Edit - Didn't think to ask/mention when initially posting, but what are you using for transcoding?

What is the general concensus about Biostar boards and Sandy Bridge?

I've surmised I should be O.K. with a PSU under 600W so I'll probably be shopping for a Seasonic model, besides, the e-tailers like to run those on special for killer prices.

Why do I see so many recommendations for ~1600 RAM with Sandy Bridge? I want to buy something alot faster. I usually end up trying to overclock my RAM to death anyway. Figured I might as well start with something fast. Do the Intel boards not play nice with RAM in the ~2000 Range?

And lastly, can I get a pretty healthy 24/7 overclock with a Corsair Water cooler?

motherboard go for Asus P8P67 V Pro or AsRock Z68 Extreme 4 Gen 3

cooler Macho is good for the price but if you want the best cooler then Noctua D14.

PSU Corsair HX or TX 600/650 watt will do you fine.

this. LucidVirtu is a godsend for encoders and Dedicated Graphics users. I personally LOVE it.

THIS x >9000!! Have one myself and love it. Either the Z68 Pro3 or the Z68 Pro3 Gen3. Excellent boards at great prices.
