AMD Turion X2 RM-70

Thread Starter
I have quite a interesting laptop here.

Yesterday I picked up this laptop from a yardsale for $50 because they said the computer doesn't boot up.

So, I reinstalled the operating system, and everything works like new.

The processor is a AMD Turion X2 RM-70 at 2.0Ghz. However, I am able to clock it up all the way to 3.5Ghz using K10stat, and using CPUZ to monitor.

At stock voltage 1.1V and 2.0ghz it gets to around 82C, now I'm overclocking the voltage is 1.075V at 3.5Ghz. How can a laptop overclock so high? And the temperature is around 89C.

on full load i'd not let it get above 90c, laptops can run hotter than the desktop equivilents but that doesn't mean you should go too far.

Are you using Prime95 to check for stability and on load temps?

Prime95 and Intel Burn test.

The max temperature for this laptop is 100C. I'm not going to let it go above 92C. It's at 3.6ghz now stable at 1.075. I'll try to lower the voltage.

The thing is how is a laptop able to clock so high when the stock is 2.0?

because it increases the lifespan of the laptop and allows you to continue to have kids after using it. It's going to get so hot you'll not be able to touch it.

I have a RM-74 in my laptop, and I can verify that they are notoriously hot running chips. If Prime95 is stable, and it doesn't go above 85-90c or so, it should be fine.

Well this laptop is near mint condition and I got it for $50. I'm surprised this chip can overclock so well. The laptop feels very cool except near the heatsink.

Good deal~ I remember many laptop cpu's being able to oc rather well. I assume they're binned lower than they can actually clock to try and cut down on power usage/heat.

If you look up some mods to keep it cool I'm sure you can find something, or even just a laptop cooler.

not a good graphics. Ati radeon hd 3200.

Anyway, seems like I got it stable at 1.0125V 4.4GHZ.

And I can prob get it to 5ghz if I put the volt up to 1.1V.

During stress testing, it's around 81C.
