PERC 5/i help needed

Thread Starter
So, I bought a PERC 5/i card from eBay to use in my server (sig rig). The seller neglected to send a memory stick with the card, as it was advertised, so I requested that he send a memory stick. He ended up sending me another full card along with a memory stick! Long story short, I have two of them now.

I figured it'd be as simple as sticking it in one of my PCIe x16 slots. Nope - the backplate doesn't fit! So I removed the backplate. But now, the card is all floppy in the PCIe slot. It probably has 1.5" of movement at the top of the card. There's no good way to secure it to the case to stop movement...

I tried both cards, and neither let the machine boot. Removed the card, and it boots fine.

Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to find a way to secure the card to the case, so it's not leaning against one side of the PCIe slot? Does the card somehow need the backplate in order to operate? Should I modify the bottom edge of the backplate so it can fit in the x16 slot? Is there any other modification that needs to be done to get a PERC 5/i card to work outside of a Dell machine?

Bump...

Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone use this card successfully in a x16 slot? Any secrets to doing so?

if its on a intel board you may have to cover pins 5 and 6 i think.

It's a Gigabyte X58-USB3 board. So, intel chipset.... would that require the same modification? What's good to cover it up with? Nail polish or something?

Thanks, missed that. It does mention POST problems, so maybe that'll be the fix.

Also, looks like I'll need to find myself one of these brackets... anyone have any ideas where?

What you may have to do is to get a standard PCI blanking plate, then silver solder or pop rivet a couple 90 degree tabs onto it for attachment onto the card; drill a couple holes into the tabs for screws and you're good.

Another option is to hit eBay US; they should have compatible backplates (I've seen them), but you'll pay over the odds for them.

Found a plate that works perfectly (off of an old 4MB Diamond video card, lol), but still can't get the machine to boot with the card installed. I tried the nailpolish over pins 5 & 6 trick, but no luck. Used 3 thick coats of nailpolish on it.

What else could I be missing? Is there a possibility that the card might just be completely incompatible with my motherboard? How would I find out if that was the case?

The only thing I can think of is that you could try testing it in a friend's motherboard, either a different model or different brand (i.e. ASUS). Make sure the board you test it in is X58 though.
