dark souls dissapointing

I was obsessed with Demon's Souls, but I feel like at this point I've pretty much played it to death. Anyway, it's still probably my favorite game of all time, mostly because of the atmosphere, pvp, and zen-like sense of timing required.

After spending some time with dark souls, I feel like it is in a lot of ways just a glorified, but inferior xbox 360 port. Here's why

1. They reused enemies and basically remade the levels from demon's souls. I feel like one of the reasons they implemented the open world system is so this would be less apparent, but yeah it's still there.

2. Shields are too strong. It's impossible to break enemies guard a lot of the time, even with a strength weapon. Not to mention they continued the stupid design choice they made in demon's souls, where if you are auto-targeting something it's impossible to get backstabbed.

I can still defeat enemies by simply waiting for them to let their guard down, but it gets tedious. And against enemies with strong piercing weapons (like estoc), frontal assault seems impossible without another piercing weapon. Being able to block boss hits not only looks dumb (I can block that huge fist with my tiny shield???), but it means you're no longer forced to learn to dodge and time attacks, one of the most challenging elements of demon's souls combat.

Strong shield/sword combos (mainly estoc/shield) were already pretty dominant in high-level pvp in demon's souls (in large part because shields grant immunity to backstabs) and I worry that they will become too dominant here (though I can't really say for sure yet).

3. PvP is kind of ruined. There's no central server, it's all p2p servers, so tournaments seem impossible. Also, impossible to play with friends. It's not totally ruined though, you can still fight and play with other people.

4. Framerate issues are a major problem in this game. The framerate is much more unstable than in demon's souls, and in a game that requires this level of precision, it's totally disastrous. 10 fps is not acceptable, they need to release patches for this.

I kind of blame xbox for this, but still they should have optimized this game more instead of rushing it out. Lame. If they don't fix this, pvp will be impossible in some areas (or fair pvp at least).

Some parts honestly feel unplayable.

5. Atmosphere, in demon's souls, was kind of ghostly and creepy. It was beautiful in a kind of gray way. Now everything just looks kind of green, and the loading screen looks like it was stolen from fable. Also, some areas are way too bright and sunny for "Souls" game.

6. Graphics, the character models look better but the background textures are awful. Guess they were gimped for xbox.

I will still play and beat this game probably, but I hate that Bandai and Sony and have conspired (out of greed) to prevent a true sequel.

The number one things holding me back from playing this game more are the poor framerate and the tediousness of some of the enemy fights, caused by the overpowered shields.

Sorry if this is a bit long, but Demon's Souls is a game that has sparked a lot of passion in it's players, for good reason I think.

If all of what you're saying is true i'm going to cry.

I can't say i'm surprised though. :'/

Is the game still horribly coded? Massive loading screens, buggy textures, cropping, major lag, flinging things into the air when you roll, etc#? And how is the 'PvP' lag?

Edit: Nevermind some of the questions, I missed a few parts of your post.

I don't know if the lag is as bad. The loading screens aren't as bad, but the tradeoff is the godawful framerates.

Seriously the framerates make this game practically unplayable in some areas. Totally unacceptable when this game is this challenging. I can't believe they released it like this.

@Grief
As far as it being on pc, sounds cool but I think you would need a controller still. Maybe you'd get better framerates though!

I haven't really had any problems with turtling enemies. Just let your shield down and they usually attack pretty quick. If not, kick them.

I'll agree on the multiplayer and lag in some levels though. Blighttown is crazy laggy.

Yeah lower Blight Town FPS is horrible. How ever, some of the points you made (like shields being so strong and the open world and enemies being tedious to defeat because of the shields) were to make the game harder. Going bonfire to bonfire is way harder than being able to teleport, like in Demon's Souls. I can say that knowing its a fact since you are granted the ability to warp between major bonfires later in the game.

The atmosphere is only a nasty green in a couple parts of Blight Town, you're crazy. The depths are a dull-ish brown that has the same eeriness as Demon's Souls. The Undead Burg is semi-bright in the upper part, but its not "too bright for a 'Souls' game," as you say it is.

The levels were not recreated. Yeah you can see a resemblance in the areas, like the Undead Burg is slightly representative of World 1 in Demon's Souls, but in no way were the levels just "re-made." The lay outs are completely different, as are textures, destructibles, etc.

Personally I think this is all in you're head and you are only trying to convince your self of these things because you are having a hard time with the game and realize its way harder than Demon's Souls.

Sounds like a lot of those points are really personal opinion.

The lower frame rates are really typical for consoles though, and p2p multiplayer probably does suck but at least we wont have to rely on a company to keep the servers online years from now like what will happen to daemon's souls.

I disagree with a lot of these points mentioned. Shields are no way overpowered, it's so easy to bypass the shield block range with my Iaito.

That may work for cheesing npcs but it's not going to fly in pvp. People are going to sit behind their shields and be basically immune to damage, as they already kind of were in demon's souls, due to the ease of dodging strength weapons.

As far as dark souls being more challenging, I don't think thats true for the most part. It just rewards a certain playstyle more, the defensive sword and shield style that was considered noob in demon's souls (in pve, but was really developed deeply in pvp) and punishes you more for playing offensively.

That, combined with the cheesy aggro mechanics (telescopic sight), and the nerfs to quick weapons (dual uchis are now useless, curved swords are slow) have slowed down the pace of fights a lot.

It definitely doesn't have the sense of twitch gameplay that I liked so much from demon's souls. Also, there's not even a unique upgrade path for dex, lame.

I hate to admit it, but this one is going back to Gamestop for a trade in on my next round of games. I was seriously disappointed with much of what was listed above. The game seemed to lose its edge in this reiteration and I have lost my desire to play it (honestly I got so bored last night I shut it down and played Rage till the wee hours.) I really wanted this game to be great, but for me, it's a trade in - and I won't even bother finishing it.
