Quick Question

Thread Starter
Hi,
I've been wanting to make either a 2D or a 3D Multiplayer FPS for my friends and I to play. I'm wanting to know what will I need to learn to program a game like this?
Thanks,
DJ

Thats a good start, you can look at OpenGl / DirectX from there.

Heh, I think you should take it a step at a time. Learning C++ (and how programming works in general) will take a while .

Well, I just wanted to know in advance what I should learn.

1) Learn to program. Starting with a game before you can do this is very bad idea.

2) Once you can write adequate software, get a book on 3D and a book on game architecture and read them the whole way through. Almost all "game programming" books are just 3D books (either D3D or OGL) and have nothing to do with games at all, but if you don't know how to do the architecture you will not be able to make a game.

3) Make some simple games applying what you have learned.

4) Make your game. By this point you should know enough to be looking back at this thread and laughing.

There are some books that will make FPS games as a running example throughout the book. I wouldn't normally recommend these but in your case if you only want to make a single FPS game and nothing else, it might be worth a look as it would just guide you through it and explain it as it goes.

P.S. Not entirely sure how you can make a 2D FPS. The closest I can think of is something like "Wolfenstein 3D", which wasn't really 2D anyway. Before that it would have been a 2D side scrolling platform game, which isn't first person.

If you're making it from scratch your in for a couple of years of learning programming, if you use a game engine that'll save you a lot of time but whatever you make will be restricted to the features of the game engine. I would recommend starting with C# and XNA if you want to make something entirely from scratch, otherwise start researching some game engines and what languages they use and you can start learning that.
