Ok so i have a head scratcher. With my Athlon II X3 445 unlocked into a Phenom II X4 (running on the stock Athlon fan), I idle at 49c an max out at 66-67c on stock speeds. However while running it as a tri-core, on stock speeds, it runs at the same temps as when unlocked! When oc'd to 3.7 Ghz, it idles at 64c and i was too scared to see the load temps so i quickly downclocked. This is flaky. I could understand the Phenom running at those temps, but an Athlon getting equally hot on the stock Athlon Fan? Any ideas as to why? anyone?

Might be too much voltage, excess voltage will cause a mass amount of temperature rise,

That's why i prefer to overclock on a custom fan, or watercooling
Try bumping down the voltage in small increments, the second it becomes unstable, go back up an increment and stay there if your very desperate for a good overclock

Still doesn't explain why the stupid thing would be idling at 49c and maxing out at 66c on stock speeds, as a tri-core with the voltage @1.28! I thought with the stock cooler it's easy to get an OC of atleast 3.6 Ghz without volcanic heat. I could understand those temps when running as a quad as the Phenom's have a bigger HSF, But c'mon not as a tri-core!

Edit: Its not any stability issues, the processor's holding up wit the oc, its the damn temps.

The stock Athlon aluminum heatsink with no heatpipes is really meant for 95W TDP applications only.... not above

try locating a stock 125w cooler. Much better !

I have a athlon x3 450 and unlocked it to a phenom x4. it idles at 36C and load is 49C (at stock speeds which is 3.2GHz) with the stock cooler.

I think there may be something wrong with your cooling setup. have you got good case airflow? how is your TIM?

But xd, on stock speeds it shouldn't be idling and maxing out at those temps! Not as a tri-core Athlon atleast?

The Cabinet is open from one side, the AC is on and i'm idling @ 45c right now, As both a Phenom and a tri-core, Doesn't matter!
