A 5000$ rig some years ago would be something like a A64 X2, DDR RAM and a 7950GX2 for instance. In f@h, a rig like this can do under 1K PPD. i should know, i have one exactly like this

To answer your question, if you want a good PPD/W/$ ration, buy a 2600K+Z68 board and go bigadv with Linux as OS.
If only i had the money. How cheap do you think that could be done nowadays? I was looking at it a while back but never really got serious.

Congrats, Remy, now start folding that GTX460 (I have 2 of them that crunch about 11k-12k ppd) and you'll run up to a million points in no time! Also, as far as really crunching points, if you upgrade that 2100 to a 2500 (even stock on your MB) and you should be able to pull about 10k-12k PPD on that as well as your GTX460 and you'll really be putting up the points!

Actually, if you go with a Z68 board and a 2500k with a decent cooler, you can OC the heck out of it and post bigadv WUs (about 45k PPD) no problem. Here are a couple of links to help you out...

2500k - $179.99 + shipping
Z68 MB - $154.99 + shipping
Hyper 212+ - $27.99 + shipping

This is the same basic setup as my SigRig (I have a P67 Board which I can't locate now) and I'm running at 4.7GHz and can work bigadv WUs without a problem.

Also, I forgot, Digi's Guide is awesome for showing you how to set it all up to crunch bigadv (and bigbigadv) WUs. It says its for a 2600k but it works just as well for the 2500k. Hope this helps!!

I just bought a dedicated 2600k z68 board with 2133 ram (2x2gb) and that was:
2600K, I got it on sale for 300. 319.99 I think regular.
ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z was an open box off newegg 130.
G.Skill X 2133 (17000) 55
coolermaster cpu fan/heatsink for 30
Antec PSU 540 was 55, off the PSU recommendation list.

All that was like 550, free 2 day shipping off newegg with the storerunner trial. Also I didn't buy a case or HDD because it is just going to be sitting out and I had an extra 250GB HDD.

If you want a HDD you can probably find one off of newegg for not even 40$ and you can get a cheap case too around 50$. So I would 650$ if you need a case and a HDD.

EDIT: Bolded prices so it would be easier to find.
Also, You could most likely find a cheaper system, this is just what I did.

awesome! repped both of you.

I'm not too keen on bigadv and heavy OCs though. even though the power draw is minimal compared to 24/7 gpu it's still more than I think I can take on every month. TBH i would just want to buy a cpu and keep it at/near stock and do regular smp wus. Would a h61/i5 2500 dedicated rig be viable? and would high speed memory matter for that setup?

sorry for partial threadjack OP

IIRC fast ram speeds help on WUs espicaly bigadvs, but I would wait until someone else with more knowledge answers.

If you went with the 2500 i5, I guess you can't do bigadvs anyway, so I don't know if high ram speeds would help that much in that setup, but I wouldn't go lower then 1866 ram speeds, that is just me though.

Mine over clocked to 859 easy so I would guess yours will as well. Makes 13-14k ppd.

It was a nvidia SLI chipset asus board, 955extream cpu, SLI 7800gtx and my still in raid 0 raptor hdds. Drop in the 850 watt psu, armor case, ultimate vista xfi.sound and 4 gigs of balistix ram and high $4's I think it made it to.
Still in use is the hdds xfi psu case os and other random stuff.

Any benchmarks I have seen with ddr3 ram show little to no improvement on both bandwidth and speed as well has timing. Meaning a solo $25 4gig stick of 1033 is as good 4 8gig high dollar speed sticks. Pcmag as reference, october I think.

That would definitely be a viable option. With that, even at stock speeds, you would do pretty well (about 12k - 14k ppd at least). Also, high speed ram may help a little, but honestly if you're not crunching bigadv WUs you won't see much of a difference. I was folding on mine at a modest 4.1GHz OC with 1333MHz RAM and was posting 17k - 19k PPD. If you're not OCing the processor there is really no need for high speed ram. Here is a link to the kit I was running, I actually had it underclocked to 1333 to help with stability on CPU OC and it worked awesome.
