Screen turning black on 80C GTX460

Thread Starter
Greetings!

I've recently acquired a Gigabyte 1GB gtx460 to be put together with my Palit 1GB gtx 460, ideally, i want them to run at the same speeds.

Due to issues with my motherboard, i'm currently just overclocking the gigabyte/Palit one at a time.

Ambient temperatures are around 19C

The Palit (witch I already had) always worked fine, although running hot on :1.020 / 850/1700/2000 (35 idle 84 full load, fan 90%)

The Gigabyte, i can't seem to overclock anywhere near, whilst others reach speeds up to 900core, i can't seem to reach 820 even..

Tried stock voltage (1.020 iirc) core 800/1600/1800 worked fine, 10 minutes furmark reaches 79 degrees, with fan @ 79%.
Core 820/1640/1800, workes nice, until it reaches 80 degrees for a few seconds, after this the screen turns black, and my PC turns unresponsive, and I can hear the fan going up from 80% to 100%.
Also tried this with higher/lower voltages, but 80C degrees, turns my pc to black..

Could the VRM be overheating perhaps?

Besides this, I see tests that have this card higher clocked, but lower temps.. (http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-460-review/29 I know its the 768mb version but still)

I've already had other topics discussing the airflow in my case as I had the Palit already so hot. But my airflow is quite proper. Besides almost everywhere I hear good things about the Gigabyte, and I'm getting these shi**y results..

Is it just me being unlucky? Could my motherboard or PSU be malfunctioning?..

Even if I place a extra 120mm fan near the GPU it only changes 1-2 degrees, depending on the position..
I'm getting quite tired of seeing these crappy results..

Hoping to get some awesome helpful comments

Edit: Replaced TIM on both

It sounds like you may have gotten a bad card. if you touch the heat sink on the card does it feel hot? there is a change it just isn't getting good thermal conduction. you might try putting new thermal compound on it. I did that to my old 8500GT and it knocked about 15C off the temps.

If I were to spend 75$ or more for this I'd sell these 2 and upgrade to a 2nd hand gtx 570/580 -_- Besides, it wont fit a SLI setup.

I'm asking more for a bit of comments, is this really high, or I'm I just joking myself that it should be lower..

I was expecting a 70 degree stressed, and ofcourse no SHUTDOWNS
