RealTemp Question - Page 2

You dont change the defaut tjmax on any i7 cpu. Processors earlier than i7's, like E6850 old core 2 duo, is where you needed to sometimes adjust tjmax, though i wouldnt even on those.

Really on any modern cpus, no reason to bring up temp or tjmax issues anymore, as tjmax is read directly from cpu. But there is 2 ways to read core temps from DTS, via peci or directly off cpu, which will result in 2-3C difference in what is reported. HWM accesses via PECI, some mobo specific software will access via peci, Coretemp and Realtemp read vis MSR register, and the couple degrees difference is irrelevant, use either program you want.

And yes if you lower tjmax, it lowers the reported temp, but all you accomplish by doing so on any i7 cpu is no longer having accurate temps.

With RealTemp set at 98C on my 2500k rig the temps seemed to be way off. The ASUS AI suite also seems to be off (too low). With RealTemp set at 90C the idle temps right after a cold startup are just a few degrees above ambient, which I think are more believable than when it was set at 98C and my idle temps where near 40C after a cold start.

Intel calibrated the cpu near tjmax, and tjmax is read off the cpu. So when you alter tjmax, you are making it less accurate than intels calibration at load temps up to tjmax temps. Even if you make idle temps more accurate, you will be sacrificing accuracy at the more important load temps. You are incorrectly assuming that idle error = load error, which intel clearly shown not the case.

At idle, speedstep on, any aftermarket cooler or water cooler, your idle temps should be ~5-6C above ambient, ie TDP is ~3-6W

At overclock of say 4.2 ghz and 1.34vcore, and speedstep off, your idle temps should be about 8+C above ambient, even at a cold start, even with water cooling.

So alternating tjmax from what is READ from an INTEL CALIBRATED CPU, is clearly making load temps more inaccurate.

But if you think an OCed i7 should idle just few C above ambient, and you are alternating tjmax to accomplish that, you are making both your load and idle temps more inaccurate, in other words your idle temps may not have been that inaccurate.
