getting from new egg. I look at anandtech and the sli 580's really don't blow away the xfire 6950's like i would of thought to justify an extra $500 almost. so hard to decide!

I recently had to make this decision on my sig rig. I decided that the CF 6950s was a much better decision. The performance is better for less money spent. If you go with a single card solution, the 580, by the time you go to buy another 580 to SLi because the price has dropped, a new single card solution will have been released that makes more sense to purchase. It comes down to a pretty simple conclusion in my book.

Spend LESS money and get MORE performance or spend more money and get less performance?

After I figured that out the decision was pretty simple.

Here are some comparisons for thought.

SLi 580 vs. CF 6950

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2...d%5B5078%5D=on

580 vs. 6950

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2...d%5B4827%5D=on

Price of 2 EVGA 580s = $979.98

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130587

Price of 2 6950 = $529.98

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102945

So let's see what conclusions can be drawn from all of this information.

1. A single 580 wipes the floor with a single 6950.
2. CF 6950 BARELY perform less then SLi 580s.
3. CF 6950 cost $450 less then SLi 580s.

Like I said, after really thinking it over it becomes an easy decision.

sure the 580 will be upgradeable in the future....but you can look at your current situation today and get 1.5x the performance of the 580 for just $10 with the 6950's. this would be a no-brainer to me.
i dont think amd hd3d allows crossfire, OP if you really want 3d save up your money lol, cause you are going to need 2 3gb 580s to run 3d on 3 monitors.

I say 6950 unless you want to spring for a 3gb. GTX580
When you crossfire or sli two cards, you don't add the memory together. For him, it would still be 2GB shared.

No this is a common misconception, it does not add the memory together

2 GTX 470's in SLI still only have 1280gb. of effective vram,

Nvidia SLI zone

OCN post on SLI/crossfire memory use

(edit)
Sorry reread your post and in your own way you confermed what I had stated that SLI/crossfire does not double your memory, OP stated he was looking at two cards with 4 gb. I took this to mean 4gb. each
(edit)
No such card as 6950 4 gb. only 6950 2gb.
