amd phenom x3 8750 overclocked but not stable :(

Hello there,

I'm pretty new to this and I read a bit before diving in. I followed this guide to the letter until it asked me to tweak the memory and northbridge. I dont know how to change those in my bios.

What I did do was increase my multiplier from 12 to 15.5 and the vcore +0.050v.

I'm able to go in the OS and run applications w/o a problem. When I run prime95 I get BSOD and when I play the battlefield3 beta i get BSOD.

Here are my specs:
-Thermaltake W0106RU 700W Complies with ATX 12V 2.2 & EPS 12V version
-AMD Phenom X3 8750 Black Edition Toliman 2.4GHz Socket AM2+ 95W Triple-Core
-XFX HD-487A-ZWFC Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
-GIGABYTE GA-MA785G-UD3H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD
-Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
-Sunbeam CR-CCTF 120 mm Core-Contact Freezer CPU Cooler

I also took some pictures of my bios

thanks for the help:D

You need more voltage. Plain and simple. No way that chip will be stable at 3.1Ghz with 1.28. It's doing good just to get into Windows and do normal tasks.

Try 1.35v in Windows which should be ~1.375 in BIOS. You may need 1.375 in Windows which will be near ~1.4v in BIOS. Be sure and watch your temps.

Sorry for going a bit semi offtopic, but are there 3 core models in the Phenom I series? Didn't know that.

So I upped it to 1.375 and thats 1.360v on windows. I ran the prime95 and ITS STILL GOING YAYYYYYYYYY smile.gif (FlawleZ == GENIUS) How long should I keep it running? Before I adjusted the voltage it wasn't going past test1.

it just went passed test10 and the temp its a steady 47.5. I read that I should not let it get close to 70, is that right?

I am curious though, what are they talking about when they talk about tweaking the memory speed and the northbridge voltage?

"KEEP IN MIND YOU HAVE PURPOSELY PRESET EVERYTHING WITHIN OPERATING SPECIFICATIONS, you raised the multiplier, and you increased the Vcore voltage to compensate for the raised multiplier, however raising the multiplier has side effects that have to be addressed.

#1. The higher multipliers sometimes go beyond the rated memory speed capabilities, so lower the memory speed to get Prime95 Blend Test stable, that will be trial and error on your part to discover.

#2. The higher multipliers go beyond the rated Northbridge settings , so Increase the Northbridge speed, and if you increase the Northbridge speed, you have to increase the Northbridge supplied voltage, and that also will be trial and error on your part to discover. "

And one last question, should I keep trying for higher overclock or should I feel lucky with what I have?

Thanks again!

Ideally you don't want temps exceeding 62C (core temp) for any length of time. The RAM voltage and NB voltage should ONLY be touched if you're pushing them and need more voltage for stability. Both your NB and RAM are at default speeds because you overclocked your CPU with a multiplier change only. You only need to worry about this if you're going to increase the overall bus speed to raise the NB and RAM speeds.

Should you keep trying? Sure! Just watch your temps and test stability until you hit your limit. You'll likely run into a wall around 3.2-3.3Ghz. Keep us posted wink.gif
