Tell you what I learned already, this guy is probably not capable of assembling a PC without breaking things and static-zapping parts.

Good Box, $60
Win-7 OEM $85
Good 450w PSU $70
DVD Drv: $25
ONE (Uno, 1) HD: $48

Good AMD Mobo: Asus A78LT-M LE $70

Good AMD Chip: Phenom II x2 555 $90 (Boxed with cooler)

Cheap RAM 2Gig $20 (2x1G)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti Video Card: $115

Yeah it was a work in progress, who needs a DVD drive anymore?

Edited my first post several times BTW OP

It's also more of an idea of what to keep an eye out for in the coming months rather than a true build this today kind of build

Though it is now under budget with Win7 assuming he can source a .edu email addy. I have 3, you must know of someone in a University.

LOL! But, he has a good idea now... so we both helped him out I think.

DO NOT include Mail In Rebate crap. They NEVER give you cash and it can take 6 to 10 weeks to get a stupid charge card back. It isn't realistic to take $600 cash therefore and calc rebates. However, many items can be found 30% cheaper and nearly NIB on Ebay and OCN For Sale forum.

http://www.overclock.net/sale/

Either combo system would work... both would perform. Scrounge around, find a combo in OCN For Sale and get something already working!

Patience and scrounging around can yield terrific savings, especially on OCN... but beware, make SURE you get a DOA return warranty...

$500 easily gets you a Phenom II x4 + HD 6850 or 6870 (depending on current prices) PC with decent quality parts. With the advent of the upcoming FX 4100 though (it will release in approx. 2 days) I will hold out on any suggestions. I also highly suggest you wait.
