Heatsink issues?

So first off just like to say I love this site and all the help the forums have brought me in my PC endeavors. That being said I turn to you guys with an issue. I have a i7 2600k with a noctua d14 heatsink. The build runs great and idles at around 30C. Yesterday, I decided to start oc and ran prime 95 to get a base line on my system. To my surprise my processor shot up to like 75-85C and my heatsink remained cool to the touch even after half an hour. Is this normal? I know prime 95 really heats up a system but what temps are unsafe and should my heatsink remain completely cool like that? Thanks!

Clean, re apply, and remount. Also make sure screws are fully snug.

Edit:
Didn't read the OC part. What clocks are you at and what voltages you pushing?

The base of the cooler should get warm. The fins by the fans will stay cool. The air coming off the fans should feel slightly warm....

Right now just baseline w/ stock voltage that's why the high temps were alarming. What range should I be expecting and what is too high?

Your temps are too high for stock. My i7 970 runs 29c Idle. 58c during stress test. I am using a Noctua NH-U12P, which is a smaller cooler. My room temp is around 75-78F most of the time.

Alright I'll probably clean, re apply, and remount tomorrow then cause my idle temps are fine. I'll post results then.

"Good news everyone!" Cleaned, reapplyed, and remounted my heatsink and after running prime 95 for about an hour im sitting well at 52C average. Although one odd thing is that my third core likes to run 8 degrees higher than the rest. Oh well, thanks again.
