Upgrading gtx 275 oc. Questions about vram and 32bit vista

Currently have an evga 275 oc. I game @ 1920x1080 and am thinking about upgrading to raise my framerates in assassins creed 2, BF3, BF:BC2, Dirt 3, Metro 2033, AVP, crysis, etc.

Currently looking at used hd 6950 2gb which I hear you can unlock to 6970 speeds, gtx 295, gtx 560ti, gtx 480, hd 5870.

I've got a q6600 @3ghz that I won't be able to upgrade for awhile. Also running vista 32bit. Will 2gb video cards even be utilized in 32bit vista, which already can't utilize my 4gb pc-6400 system ram? Should I just hold out until new cards come out or is this a good boost in fps?

Video ram has nothing to do with regular ram, and there are no limitations of the OS capping your vram.

A 6950 is a really great card but chances are you're not even going to find a version with a bios that can be unlocked to a 6970 (there are few out there; it was patched).

You don't really even need the extra vram at that resolution. It only makes a difference once you go past 1900x1200. Just get a standard 560ti 1gb vram because its cheaper, easier to OC, and good for your resolution.

Why don't you get Windows 7? I believe only the MSI Twin Frozr III 6950s can.

Really don't want to spend $100 on windows 7 as I only game and surf the net on my computer. Will however upgrade to windows 7 whenever I make the switch to an i5 2500k or Bulldozer, which won't be for a while since I am going to be broke soon
