GTX 590 performance with 2560x1440

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum, been about 10 years since i've built a computer. I've been lost in apple land. Just finished building my rig and decided to go all out on the video card. I was able to pick up a GTX 590 from my local microcenter with the 20% off coupon from the online deals forum. I am using a 27" imac as a display for now til i find something suitable. Resolution is 2560x1440. The plan is to get 3 24" 1080p screens.

I am generally dissappointed with the gtx 590's performance. Am I expecting too much at this resolution? I tested Space Marine, Crysis 2 dx11 /w texture pack, and BF3 beta.

Space marine played decent but had considerable slow downs in certain areas. Felt the game was sluggish. Crysis 2 played pretty dang smooth, but I noticed more glitching than I wanted. In one area, I shot the shotgun into the water and my framerates dropped into the single digits. BF3 beta... had horrible tearing and glitching, but I think this was common with everyone. Framerates was pretty nice, but I would sometimes dip below 20fps. I alt tab out to notice my GPU memory usage hovering around 1.5gb

For the price I paid, i'm kinda dissappointed things weren't flawless. I'm not sure if i'm expecting too much, or if the card is defective, but it makes me wanna throw in the towel and test the waters with a 6990. I've been outta the computer game for a while, not sure if my expectations are valid. Anyone else have similar experiences? Will turning to the red tide fare any better for me? Not trying to start a flame war.

So my options are...

A: Return the GTX 590 and get a ATI 6990
B: Return the GTX 590 and get a GTX 580 3gb sli
C: Return the 590 and go with 6970 CF
D: Sit back and wait for better drivers?

First off, what drivers are you running?

Second, I think you may be overwhelming that Antec PSU. GTX 590 requires a minimum of 50a on the 12v rail and that unit seems to have 25a each on 4 separate rails, I'm not entirely sure thats enough. Are you using two rails to power it?

im using two rails to power it. Wasn't originally planning on getting a video card like that. If I do decide to SLI or CF I would def get a beefier psu.

im using the beta drivers 285.27 and before that 280.26.

I use 6990 on 1440p and works great. I'm pretty sure 590 fails hard with high resolution :/ That 1.5gb vram's not enough.

Don't forget, you ARE using SLI now. biggrin.gif

While two 580's can run on a 650w supply, most are single rail and have more than 50a on that rail. From the reviews I can find on your unit I think you're maxing out the PSU thanks to the split-rail design. The symptoms you described are also in line with that. How old is the PSU?

Thats why people with SLI 570's and a measly 1.28GB have no problems maxing games at 1440p, right? 590 is very competitive with the 6990, despite what owners of the latter like to claim (b4 OMG haterz I owned two 6990's.)

Er, you do realize that a 590 is just 2x570's?

You basically downgraded.

No, its not. It is most definitely 2x underclocked 580s, besides which who was this comment even directed at? confused.gif

6990 completely outperforms 590 on 1440p or higher resolutions.

So go post in the 590 vs 6990 battle royale thread with some results and prove it? Your comment doesn't do much to help to OP with his questions.

Yeah it does... read the OP, cause I'm suggesting option A or C. 580 3gb would technically be a downgrade
