GTX 590 performance with 2560x1440 - Page 2

here's a review for the power supply
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=140

As for the power supply not giving the video card enough juice. This does make sense. That could explain why i'm getting random glitches and slowdowns.

But from what I understood, the 590 has a tdp of 350-375w. Split between two rails thats roughly 175-187w per rail. This comes out to about 16amps per rail. Unless I somehow have them on the same rail, I don't think this is it. But I will get a beefy psu this weekend and i'll give it a shot.

He actually wrote 3GB 580 SLI which would be the best of the lot, but I was referring to helping him with his already $700+ purchase before he tries another.

This doesn't need to turn into an AMD vs Nvidia thread god knows we have enough of those already. I have no brand loyalty to speak of, I buy and test cards from both sides because its fun. Surprisingly enough, you find that all the hype and internet hearsay isn't actually the truth when you run them for yourself. One of the biggest bandwagons to be on is the 590 sucks and 6990 rules, yet when looking at reviews of the card and the benches/game stats posted on here it is clearly not the case.

Yeah, theoretically it should be no problem but the recommended specs of 700w and 50a are at absolute maximum and it seems like you're only having issues in hard DX11 scenes where you are pushing that little extra. I would give PSU a shot and see, if not just return both and try the 6990. Could be a bum card, who knows.

I think technically it would be an improvement. Instead of 2 underclocked 580 with 1.5gb per die (gtx 590), I would have 2 overclockable 580s with 3gb vram per die.

If that's the Antec TruePower New 750w, then it'll be perfectly fine on your build. It's a single rail unit, split into 4 rails at the connectors. Internally its still just one rail.

If you MUST do anything at all, return your 590 and get 2x 580's. The 590 isn't a good card at all unless you are FORCED to a single card solution (micro ATX cases anyone?). If you've got the room for two 580's, get them. And you've got the resolution to start putting a 3GB card to use.

oh yeah u said "SLI" >_<

Best bang for the buck, depending on ur location: 6970CF
Best performance: 580 3gb SLI

I'm pretty sure the performance hiccups are a VRAM issue, considering ur resolution.

LOL This is high res, not 1080p which both cards max pretty much every single game. Getting 110 vs 100fps in 1080p mean absolutely nothing.

I was talking about 1600p performance. Like I said, I owned two 6990's I know perfectly well what they're capable of, the performance can go either way depending on the game, simple as that. Its not some overwhelming crushing defeat of the 590.

Go ahead and check out some pretty graphs, maybe it will help, they include both 1080p and 1600p.

I'll even quote the article for you:

Quote:
Neither card can boast overwhelming advantage over the other. The AMD Radeon HD 6990 is faster in 3DMark 2011, BattleForge: Lost Souls, Aliens vs. Predator (2010) and F1 2010, and also a little ahead of its opponent in Crysis, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead 2: The Sacrifice, Just Cause 2 and Sid Meier’s Civilization V. In its turn, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 is ahead in 3DMark Vantage, Unigine Heaven, Resident Evil 5, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, Borderlands, Lost Planet 2, Mafia 2, StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty (at the high-quality settings) and in Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. 2. It also has a small advantage in Metro 2033: The Last Refuge. Thus, each card has 9 wins and the rest of the games/benchmarks are draws. If you want exact numbers, the GeForce GTX 590 is 1.6 to 6.8% ahead of the Radeon HD 6990 in the FSAA-less mode and 12.1 to 16.8% ahead in the FSAA mode. This is pure mathematics, though.
Anyways, going OT again. Soymilk how old is the PSU? TO answer pioneers question as to if its the old version or the new one.

brand new.... i bought it before the video card. It is an older model, because it doesn't have the blue led fan. But I didn't want that anyways. I bought it because the original plan was 2 6850 lol.

right now i'm considering either

(2) gtx 580 3gb [$1100-1200]
(1) ati 6990 + the option to trifire with a 6970 [ $750 + $300 ]

my goal is to game on 3 1080p or 1200p screens. Either in 3d surround vision or eyefinity.

Going that route, tri-fire will be better for a similar price to a pair of 580 3GB cards. If you're getting rid of it, sell me your 590

I'd still go with the pair of 580's. They'll run off your current PSU (assuming its a TruePower New, mine doesn't have an LED fan either). And they'll easily power through Surround at 1080p.
