ASRock Z68 Discussion/Owners Club - Page 250

Recently had an issue trying to install the new Windows 8 Preview Release, so thought I'd share, as I think it's related to the 2.10 BIOS on the ASRock Z68 Fatal1ty Pro Gen 3.

(copied from MS support forum)
My motherboard (ASRock Z68 Fatal1ty Pro Gen3) had a BIOS update to version 2.10 last month. Now when I got to the BIOS and select my DVD player, it has one listing as PATA: Plextor DVD and another listing as UEFI: Plextor DVD. If I select the "PATA: Plextor DVD" as the boot drive, and save to BIOS, the system will reset and POST, but will then just show a blinking cursor and doesn't read the DVD. If I go back into the BIOS and select the "UEFI: Plextor DVD" and restart, then it does show the "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD" and will read from the DVD. But then when I select the custom install, it shows all the hard drives with the message "Windows cannot be installed on this Disk. The Selected Disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed on a GBT disk."

So what I did was took a 16GB USB Thumb Drive and used a program called ISO to USB. Had it install the ISO to the thumb drive and made it bootable. Restarted, went into teh BIOS and select the 1st Boot Drive to be "USB: CORSAIR". Restarted, Windows 8 started to install, selected Custom, and NOW was able to select the drive that I wanted it to install to, without that "GBT" error that it was giving me when using the DVD.

So the problem may have to do with this 2.10 BIOS, as selecting "PATA: Plextor DVD" will not boot the DVD, but "UEFI: Plextor DVD" will boot, but then can't install due to the GBT error.

Geez, that seems like a heckuva lot of work. I've installed Win8 on several systems, including a four year-old laptop, without issue (installed on a ssd on that laptop, and it just flies, absolutely amazing)..

Personally, I do not like the boot options in the bios of my z68 gen 3, the way it's set up. I much prefer the traditional hdd, CD, floppy, et al, and then with a separate switch for hdd boot order. I suspect the fatality is similar.

Interesting, similar issue here.

While I do like the new BIOS, I have a USB 3.0 PCI card this system now doesn't like (HighPoint's RocketU 1144A), and suddenly, a DVD that used to boot (it's based on WinPE) now crashes. Same goes for the USB flash memory stick equivalent.
Worked around the boot media crasshing issue by choosing the UEFI version of the USB flash memory stick, phew.
But yeah, a little strange and mildly annoying.
At least it's not something that can't be worked around, wrote it up/screenshots here:

When I installed the Win 8 Consumer Preview months ago, my BIOS was at 1.30 and it had no problem installing my I had "PATA: Plextor DVD" selected in the BIOS as the first boot drive. Now if I do the same thing with the 2.10 BIOS, it will not boot and DVDs unless I change it to UEFI DVD, but then causes the install errors that I listed earlier on this page. Luckily I was able to burn the ISO to a thumb drive and select USB Corsair as the first boot, and install without issue. If that didn't work, then I was going to temporary reflash to the 1.30 BIOS to install from the PATA DVD, then afterwards flash back to 2.10. So it seems this is a bug with the new BIOS.

Amazing. . I remember a discussion some months back about the pros and cons of updating your bios. It used to be a necessary evil, now it it pretty easy to do, but it can cause problems.

BTW, I just installed a USB 3.0 card from Silverstone into my system without issue. I fried my front panel USB 2.0 ports a couple of months ago when my son plugged in a very cheap mp3 player. It almost fried the USB ports in my gigabyte system as well. Anyway, the Silverstone version works just fine. Got it at the egg, the one with the front panel connection plate.

Can't remember what board you have (no specs listed?) ... BUT a new bios is out today, 2.20 that apparently addresses "some" issues w/Win 8, maybe yours is related and the new bios will help?

1. Add Dehumidifier Function.
2. Modify for Windows8 shut down behavior.
3. Update CPU code.
4. Modify i-Rock PS2 keyboard issue.
5. Improve discrete VGA card vBIOS compatibility

EDIT: if I remember right your board is the E3/G3? the 2.20 bios is out on 6/13 for that one wink.gif

Ah sigh, alas the new UEFI isn't available for the extreme4 non gen 3...and it truly needs it if you ask me since I've run into quite a few issues while using 2.05 uefi lately.

I have the Z68 Fatal1ty Pro Gen 3, and it now does have a 2.20 BIOS listed on its page.

Though not sure if it would correct the PATA DVD boot issue that I encountered with the 2.10 BIOS.

Is it possible to boot from usb with the EX 3 Gen 3?

If so how? Cause I can't figure it out.

Edit: I figured it out. Damn they sure like to hide it.

So after I update the BIOS on my Z68 Fatal1ty Pro Gen3 to version 2.20, I then had the 1st boot drive set to PATA: DVD. Then ran the Win 8 DVD and it showed the hard drives without the "EFI" error. So the problem had to be a bug in the 2.10 BIOS.
