Strict $650 Hardware Build - Comment Please

Thread Starter

So my friend wants a machine, and can only spend $650 on hardware. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable in building computers, so I think I came up with a pretty decent build considering the limitations:

-All parts MUST be purchased on Amazon.com and must be eligible for Prime shipping
-Must be Phenom II X6 CPU
-Motherboard/PSU must have Crossfire support
-1TB 7200 RPM minimum
-8GB RAM
-Decent card (this will be a gaming rig)

Here is what I put together, please rate:
CPU:

Motherboard:
RAM:
GPU:
HDD:
PSU:
DVD+-RW:
Case:
Total Cost: $649.91 w/Free 2-Day shipping.

I know the PSU is not the GREATEST, but for the price range, on Amazon, with minimum requirements, I believe it is the best choice. Please comment!

if you live in socal or az, i'll build your friend a $650 computer that is way better than that. My current rig costed less than $700 and it's not that bad of a computer....

otherwise...your build is decent! i would probably downgrade the ram to 4gb and upgrade the gpu to 6950 or something. wish ur friend cud get an ssd but owell!

That's probably the best you're going to get for $650 if you go the AMD route. You might be able to get better performance/overclocking out of a Core i3/i5 though.

Why MUST it be a Phenom II X6? I don't really see that helping in gaming, I only see it being an advantage if he encodes large video files or something like that.

Please elaborate how you could make it better? I do live in socal, so where would you buy the parts? Even the 2500k at Microcenter exceeds the $650 budget.

I would downgrade to 4gb as well, but as stated, 8gb is a must.

Different PSU, badly. I wouldn't even trust that CoolerMaster unit to power that build with one card, let alone Crossfire.

Otherwise its an okay build. I agree, a Core i5 2500k build might do a little better, however you'll have to sacrifice the GPU in that scenario more than likely.

Knock it down to the Phenom II 955BE instead, since its just gaming. You'll save some money that way, and maybe get a 6950 into budget.

EDIT:
Rosewill Green 630w PSU instead of that junk CM unit. It'll handle Crossfire'd 6950's easily.

It will definitely be AMD since he wants 6 cores. He is a gamer, but wants his computer to be able to be used for everything, including Photoshop, video editing, etc, even though that will not be the primary purpose of his rig.

I figured I would hear that, lol. Can you make a suggestion for me? I think the budget allows for ~$50 for a PSU, but has to be on Amazon :-/

Just saw your edit. I know this is stupid, but that requires shipping not through Amazon o_O He needs this computer by Thursday (I dunno why), and the PSU would not make it on time.

If you buy it from Rosewill ($59.99), they have faster shipping options available if he NEEDS it by that time. He won't get another PSU that will handle Crossfire in that price range, its that Rosewill unit, or an Antec Neo ECO 620. Sometimes the Earthwatts 650 is in that price range, but not often.

Just double checked, there is NOTHING below $60 other than that Rosewill that would fit your criteria (Crossfire support in the future). At least nothing that I can find, and can recommend.

That Rosewill unit is a solid unit. Just make him use his old PSU or something until his new one comes in, if he MUST have it by Thursday.
