iPads dominate among tablets in driving digital traffic. In August 2011, iPads delivered 97.2 percent of all tablet traffic in the U.S. iPads have also begun to account for a higher share of Internet traffic than iPhones (46.8 percent vs. 42.6 percent of all iOS device traffic).

I'm sure windows 8 will do a bit to change that. Apple basically invented the tablets and that was not long ago so its reasonable that they should own the market for now.

i find stats like these rather odd, in the area i live most people have android tablets....idk, maybe its regional, or they only pull stats from certain areas.

i just notice when i go to hotspot areas ie, book stores, coffee shops, restaurants, etc, i see more android tablets than i do ipads.

Here's the problem with the Comscore study: it reads the user agent string of browsers, so internet traffic will be skewed towards iPads because their Safari browsers are immediately detected as, well, iPads. On Android tablets, the UA string can be changed to be any of these presets: Tablet, Phone, iPad, Desktop, Custom. So if a lot of users are using the Desktop UA string (most do to properly render full websites), then these tablets cannot be counted.

Tablets have been around for about 10 years....

However, just like the iPhone created the american smartphone boom, the iPad will has started a tablet boom. Apple has been so key in making new technology accessible. Plus, iPads are pretty slick and damn well marketed. Still waiting for something truly open source.

errr no?

Apple may have re-commercialized it for consumers but by no means did they "invent" the tablet

Oh, that's interesting. I always have desktop mode enabled on my tablet (not an ipad).

The "current" tablet market has really only been around for a couple years, give or take. There may have been tablets in the past, but there was no market for them. I would argue that Apple virtually created the tablet market that exists today, so the assessment of why they should be "owning" the market at the current time makes sense. Though I still doubt that it's 97.2%--that number does seem a bit off.

I don't deny the iPad's success in the tablet market, it is surely killing Android tablets in sales though that's not saying much; all but 2-3 Android tablets are crap. (Galaxy, Streak, Transformer? Am I right here?) We need the Kal-El powered tablets to hit. THEN we'll see iPad's market-share plummet ~10% percent per quarter. It does annoy me to see Android smartphone owners buying an iPad though. It's not even about brand loyalty, it's about the compatibility between devices. It's like having an iPhone and buying an Android tablet over an iPad, or having a Mac and primarily using Windows 7 on it. Just as Android took off slow with the G1, it'll take a bit of time. I'd say Android started off better with the tablets than it did with the G1.
