i have been under the impression taht HTC almost caters specifically to the aftermarket world, while samsung is indifferent which is why more HTC phones have excellent support at places like XDA...

Not really... Samsung has been pretty good lately.
HTC hasn't though. I mean look at the HTC EVO 3D and their whole locked bootloaders issue.
