People need to know that iOS uses GPU rendering as well so even if it has less CPU power it makes up by using the GPU which Android devices usually don't use.
It's faster CPU is all it has.
Yeah, but ICS which is coming out in about a month will add that feature to Android phones.... Then what? O.O

You mean a Prescott at 5 jigawatts isn't as fast as an i7 at 5 jigawatts?

Using all your ram is as simple as loading a half-dozen web pages. If you then (for example) switch to a youtube video, the iphone will have to page all those web pages to the internal drive in order to load the video else it will have to drop all the webpage info (caching only browser settings) and reload the pages (using more of that $15/GB bandwidth). Either of these is less desirable than having more RAM.

The cost of changing from 2x 256MB to 2x 512MB chips is fairly small. I guess Apple needs a "killer feature" for its next generation.

android fans... always coming up with bs excuses... now that benchmarks come showing iphone4s is a speedy device, they're all backpedaling with "wait for ICS then android will smash iphone4s!!!"

Good luck to the non-nexus users getting the update.

Just goes to show how incredibly optimized iOS is to get along so well on only 512MB.

Many are surprised by the inclusion of only 512MB of RAM on the A5's PoP stack, however since most apps not in use are kept out of memory to begin with having more memory doesn't actually buy you a whole lot of performance. There are also potential battery life concerns with larger DRAMs: more room for apps to remain resident in memory leaves more DRAM cells to refresh, which impacts power consumption (although eventually Apple will have to cross this bridge, likely with the next process node transistion). I suspect the biggest issue created by not outfitting the iPhone 4S with more DRAM is limiting game developers to smaller levels, fewer unique textures, etc...

I don't mind. I find iOS about 2-3x as fluid as Android.

In my opinion iOS is much more optimized for the iPhone's hardware so the hardware does not have to be as good to give the same if not better performance. Look at Tegra 2, the dual core 1 Ghz processor usually working together with 512 Mb or 1 GB of ram cant even play 720p properly without greatly compressing the video file as opposed to a slower single core A4 flawlessly playing video up to 1080p. Just my 2 cents

The A4 can only do 720p. It's the A5 that can do 1080p.

As people are saying, who cares - as long as there's nothing that will use that, there's no point in having extra RAM. Heck, I'm using less than 512MB on my laptop at the moment, and I'm using firefox and ripping and decrypting a DVD right now.
