[Gizmodo]iPhone 4S Only Has 512MB RAM - Page 10

Not sure why it matters, the iPhone is just more efficient, that is, it doesn't need 1GB of ram, or 2GB, or whatever. Too many people focus on specs rather than performance itself.

If you have 512mb of ram on a system that performs well, and another sytem that needs 1GB to perform the same, what makes the 512mb system worse off? (rhetorical question)

Guize, again, my humble little prepaid Optimus V has 425 MB of RAM and I've never had memory issues, on Froyo or Gingerbread. In fact, I've never seen it climb above ~250MB even with lots running in the background. It feels just as responsive as those fancy ass 4.5" monstrosities with 10 GB of RAM and 9000 core A9s.

And on a single core at a lowly 600 MHz.

You must have gotten lucky--my Optimus V lags all the time--and I don't really multitask a lot of apps all that frequently. It was great bang-for-buck, but it's not nearly as smooth as, say, an iphone or iphone4--likely also not as smooth as other android smartphones either (though I haven't used any). Still happy with this little thing, but it's definitely not nearly as responsive as most other comparable phones. I don't plan on ditching it, but it is what it is--a budget phone.

Also due to how much lighter iOS5 is, 512MB will probably be plenty for most users. Android is heavier and needs the 1GB ram.

I will never buy myself an iPhone, I dislike everything about Apple, but people are cursing Apple for the wrong reasons.

These^

Might not be the best analogy, but Windows Vista and 7 both recommend 2GB+ of RAM, whereas something like Ubuntu or any other Linux distro doesn't need that much at all, and can run just as efficiently. People get so ridiculously butt-hurt over Apple on this forum. It's so disappointing. Almost depressing.

What i dont understand is why cant iPhone 4 run Siri. Its total marketing bogus because its does not need much CPU power considering how fast it responds in 4S and the fact that it uses the Internet.

considering that phones are emerging with 2gbs of ram... this is pitifully sad.

Apple has always been about selling hardware with miniscule hardware improvements. If they gave iPhone 4 users Siri software, people would not "upgrade" to the 4s.

somebodys gonna hack it and put siri on their iphone 4. I guarantee it.

The iPhone 4S is for those who have a 3GS or 3G. Considering the iPhone 4 is good for another iOS update, those that have the 4 should be fine until the next iPhone. I've been very happy with my iPhone 4 since I got it, but ever since I dropped it and shattered the front screen, it hasn't been the same. 512MB of RAM on a phone is completely fine with me especially if the OS is optimized and doesn't require more than that.

That's because Siri uses the GPU in the 4S. The SGX535 in the 4 isn't powerful enough. I'm going off what someone else has said on mactalk.com.au but the guy who said it is very educated on the subject.

You'll see soon enough whether this is true or not, but I'll guarantee you that the iPhone 4 doesn't have a powerful enough GPU.
