Firmware?

Thread Starter
I read about firmware but what is it?

Also ppl who say to download firmware should put some sort of warning as well b/c ....

From Crucial' firmware website:
"WARNING: The firmware update process is done entirely at your own risk. Before initiating the update process be sure to backup or make copies of all important files. If the firmware process is interrupted your solid-state drive may not function properly.
Downgrading firmware has been suggested by some as a possible fix for various issues. However, doing so will cause the drive to be unusable, and also voids your Crucial SSD product warranty. Please do not attempt to downgrade (a.k.a. down rev) the firmware from version 0006 to version 0002. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact our Technical Support department."

Crucial gives a 3 year warranty and I'd rly hate to loose that thinking im downloading something intended to help my ssd.

From Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmware):
Quote:
In electronic systems and computing, firmware is a term often used to denote the fixed, usually rather small, programs and/or data structures that internally control various electronic devices.
And only DOWNgrading your firmware voids your warranty, UPdating it does not. Also, Firmware flashes using software means (which is what 99% of people do) is inherently risky (which is why you don't do it frequently) as any interruption to the process can/will brick whatever you're flashing. I've seen Logitec Harmony Remotes, Blu Ray players, Motherboards (the BIOS is firmware of sorts) all be bricked when flashing new firmware onto them.

If something is bricked by UPdating the firmware, which is allowed under the warranty, the MFG will replace the unit, or fix the failed flash for you with a "hardware" flash (using proprietary tools that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars).

Downgrading voids the warranty not upgrading.

Firmware is the OS for the SSD.The SSD have a small "computer"(or processor or micro controller). This computer need some instructions to run the SSD.Those are stored in the firmware of the SSD.

Firmware is the "SSD" of the SSD.

Thanks for letting me know I was kinda worried there. um do you update firmware on a new SSD before or after the OS is put on it?

Before. With most SSDs the drive is "reset" when new firmware is loaded and it will think it's blank whether it is or not. Similar to how you lose BIOS settings and Overclocks when you flash your BIOS.

How to tell if it is already v.0009 before installing windows? I just ordered from Superbiiz and they could not tell me if it was already the current version. I called a few other suppliers and they told me the same thing. I thought it said it on the SSD itself in the sticker with all the serial and other information.

I updated the firmware on my SSD and am glad i did. It is easy to do and only took a few minutes.

Hi,

If you look at the back of the SSD when you get it, it shows the
firmware version.

Hoping mine was 0009 but showed 0002.

Took 30 seconds to update it after you D/L latest version.
I did mine in achi mode off a formatted 8gig usb stick.
May try it in IDE as have heard of problems with it in achi.

Will also show in disk management once done.
Also shows on my bootup splash screen.

Then i should just do this before installing windows. Also it has to be plugged into a SATA 3.0gb port correct? The only thing I am wondering now is if I will be able to reinstall win 7 pro since the one I bought was the OEM version and not retail. I think it only matters if you are changing motherboards, but not sure. Getting a hold of microsoft is a pain in the butt.

Hi,

I'd do it before you load windows.

I set achi mode in the Bios before updating or loading Win so wouldn't have
play games in the registry to go to Raid O if wanted to later on.
Seemed to be a problem.

As to the OEM version, the OS key is tied to your motherboard.
Shouldn't have a problem.

As to the Sata III ports I am not running mine on the Marvel controller but
off the the Intel ports, Sata II.
Sata III not natively supported with the chipset on our boards.
I use the Sata III ports for my WD Sata III 6g 640 storage drive.
Problem well documented on our boards.

You can try it either way as to performance and problems.
