Sumit Gupta, manager of the Telsa GPU business for Nvidia, said the Oak Ridge system may see performance "well north of 20 petaflops" if it is built out to its capability. The Oak Ridge system will have as many as 18,000 GPUs.
GPU processing sure has come a long way.

Sounds neat - I like the idea of having the world's most powerful supercomputer in the U.S.

One thing that I don't understand though - why are GPUs being implemented in supercomputers? I would think that pure arithmetic logic, like that provided by a processor, would be of more use in a field like supercomputing than what a GPU brings to the table. What does a GPU do more efficiently than a processor? It says that they're removing one Opteron processor per node and replacing it with an nVidia GPU? How will that help computing?

Perhaps they're replacing the remaining CPU with a 16 core BD based Opteron. Remember, Cray was the first customer to take delivery of the new Opterons.

GPU's are highly parallel processing units. They can move a ton of data compared to most processors due to extremely high memory bandwidth and tons of compute cores. However, unless the code is highly parallel and multi-threaded as well (very difficult I might add), a modern CPU would be faster.

Use the Opeteron 16-core to control the GPU and other functions of the system, and you'll have one helluva system for folding and other compute-intensive tasks.

You can look at a GPU as a dumbed-down CPU with hundreds of cores. So it can't calculate as many different ways as a CPU can, but if you can write a program to calculate on it and utilize all of those cores (parallel processors) at the same time, it can be much, much faster than a CPU.
