DVD drive DOA?

I've recently finished my HTPC build, and everything is working nicely except the DVD drive. It's a Samsung SN-T083C which is a slimline slot-loading DVD writer. When I try and insert a disc, I get nothing. Usually slot loaders start sucking in the disc after you push them in about half way, but literally nothing happens with this one. I've tried it multiple times, I've tried pushing the disc in so it's almost entirely in the drive, still nothing. The drive shows up when I do an lshw (list hardware in Ubuntu) and shows in the BIOS, and the activity LED flashes when I first turn on the PC, so it's definitely connected.

Am I missing something, or is this drive dead?

Thanks.

Try a different sata cable.

If that doesn't work try a different port on your mobo

drivers maybe? I don't have a lot of experience with Ubuntu but drivers seem to account for most of all hardware issues.

Makes no difference sadly.

As far as I know you don't need drivers for optical drives of any kind in linux, it's all in the kernel. Never had a problem with it before.
