[Shacknews] Rage launch problems 'out of our control'

Quote:
ID technical wizard John Carmack was less restrained, describing the launch driver issues as "a real cluster ....." (That's secret code for a naughty word.) While id and AMD had worked together before launch, with id making "significant internal changes" to work best with AMD tech, it all went to pot.
Quote:
"we were running well in-house on all of our test systems. When launch day came around and the wrong driver got released, half of our PC customers got a product that basically didn't work," Carmack said.
Why ID chooses consoles as lead platform for games:

Quote:
"That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version."
Quote:
"Nowadays most of the quality of a game comes from the development effort put into it, not the technology it runs on. A game built with a tenth the resources on a platform 10 times as powerful would be an inferior product in almost all cases."
Article: http://www.shacknews.com/article/705...pc-not-leading

Decided to quote some important bits since most probably won't read the article anyways.

Hopefully we can put this thing to bed and see Rage for the fantastic game it is.

My ass, a game's graphical fidelity shouldn't be entirely dependent on 3rd party software. Neither hardware manufacturer has an obligation to make sure RAGE is working out of the box (so to speak) and it's pretty clear id screwed up big time. No less Carmack has been pushing off all responsibility onto Nvidia and AMD rather. If RAGE had worked flawlessly on old drivers and later driver releases destroyed that compatibility maybe Carmack would have a valid complaint. But as it stands AMD and Nvidia were the ones that FIXED HIS BROKEN GAME.

Edit: Also, that article is just regurgitating news from the past week. I doubt it's actually newsworthy.

"Fantastic" while it lasts, I had 8.5 hours of play time when I beat it. For a game that seemingly has a large "open" world that just doesn't cut it for me. The game looks great, and runs great, but it only felt like the first half of a full game. And the ending....is just terrible.

I strongly disagree.

Obviously you don't remember Quake when it was first released or the issues associated with Doom...

AMD releasing the wrong driver is far from IDsoft's fault...

Works wonderfully on my 590's and looks like crap on my 6990's...

Video drivers can make or break a game.

When Far Cry (original) first released, it worked perfectly on my Geforce 4 Ti 4200, while it looked and ran like dogcrap on my Geforce FX 5900. A driver update months later fixed this issue.

John Carmack has every right to be pissed right now.

You must rush through your games then. I'm at 12 hours and probably a little half way through the story. Granted I've done a lot of the side missions, races and mini-games. The CCG is awesome!

So basically all graphics cards are broken but your game isn't. Despite the fact those card's drivers work for... everything else. Makes total sense.

I usually don't, I did several side quests and extra racing events. I got about 25-30 hours of Fallout 3, and about 20 out of Borderlands. In most games side-quests are helpful in getting your money or XP so that you're strong enough to continue, however in RAGE they're completely unnecessary as the game it easy enough that none of them are required. In Fallout 3 or Borderlands I actually felt like the side-quests were really worth it in terms of how much better off I was after having done them, but in RAGE I would come back and get $200 that I didn't really need.
