I'm about to trade my ATI Sig cards and come home to NVIDIA. I'm going to be picking up an Asus Gtx 580 DC II. I was wondering if anyone has had issues with the weight of this monster. Also, any chance of sli with my Sig board ? I can't find an answer to satisfy me online. Thanks for all your help, intelligent experiences/answers will be rewarded.
I actually haven't had a single issue. Not one. Now, granted, I didn't get to play a single second of BF3 beta. The setup has been great for me, I'm just ready to try something different I think. I'm picking up your exact card inchy, and trying for 1ghz on the core ! Besides, I'll be selling anyway when 79xx rolls around.
It'll fit alright, but they'll be slightly sandwiched. Shouldn't be a problem if you cool them well enough (stick a fan in the gap, to push some air into the top card)
your case does have a fan on the side panel so should cool it pretty well.
my sandwiched reference 580's run plenty fine, with good temps too
I think something to consider is that yes these cards will put extra strain on the board, but I've not seen any mention of them breaking a board in the process
More importantly however is that given they both exhaust heat into the case and the top card will be deprived of air, overheating might be an issue.
I was looking at the Direct CU IIs as well but decided that if I do go down that route, and if I do SLi in the future it will have to be, one Direct CU II and one standard two slot cooled GTX580.
The Direct CU II will take my bottom slot to get the air it needs, while the reference cooled GTX580 can sit above it and dump hot air outside my case.
ASUS gives you a longer SLI cable with the card for 2-way.
If you did 3 of these the last one will hang over the edge of most boards which in and of itself isn't a problem unless it's a small case with no room.
I am just not certain where you would get a connector for 3-way SLI. Probably have to ask ASUS

This is exactly how my DirectCUII is setup with a reference 570. Works great.
I had one of these cards and it worked very nicely.
The one thing I had an issue with was that the card sagged a lot in the back end due to it's weight. I ended up buying a HAF X case specifically for the included bracket to support larger heavier cards.

The top card is the hotter card though. Since the DCII has the better cooler I would put that one on top.
OP, are there any other GTX 580's you would consider, maybe ones that are dual slot instead of 3. The MSI Lighting's are great and cool just as well as the DCII. Also EVGA has a newer design on there 580's that features 2 or 3 fans, I dont remember,
