Ace Combat: Assault Horizon - Page 2

So? How is it now?

I used to love all PS2 Ace Combat games. But this one is meant to be different.

been busy lately, and told myself I won't be getting it or playing it for a while... yet I just went out and bought it today...

starting it up now...

I hate to be double-posting... but it's been a day since my last and no one has posted anything...

so after beating the game earlier today, here's my impression...

in the beginning it was a bit hard to grasp the whole DFM and ASM gameplay... as they're semi-on-rail and is like the total opposite of HAWX's assistance off... rather than throwing you off far away to see the whole battlefield, they zoom in to see the plane you're chasing... VERY closely...

and it's a CORE feature in the game, that seems you HAVE to use... some planes are just plain impossible to kill without it... which is something that's frowned upon by a LOT of people it seems...

then the control schemes... as mentioned on the first page, you need to have it set to Classic, if you're used to playing flight games, because otherwise, it's also "automatically" turning for you, rather than leaving you to control the roll, yaw, and elevation...

the story was interesting... a lot more solid than HAWX was (I'm comparing to HAWX, the first, a lot because I've played it extensively, and this new reboot of Ace Combat reminds me GREATLY of it...) the characters you feel were a lot more alive, the voice acting was also great and although highly predictable, was somewhat interesting from beginning to end...

the non-jet sections, like the Blackhawk Gunner or Apache parts were decent... although after playing Activision's Apache game, it felt too automatic... I would have hoped there was a "Classic" control for helicopters as well... it's just so weird having your helicopter tilted forward while remaining stationary... not to mention the 1 second roll... (where it took like 3-4 seconds and a loss of about 100m in altitude in the Apache game)

AC-130 is a lot more dull than in Modern Warfare, MW2 or HAWX2 but that made it more believable... the bombing runs were interesting... but it has the same HAWX syndrome, where guided bombs were THRUSTED out of the plane and hits the ground before your jet flying at mach 1 can reach it... Unguided Bombs have a drop lag however...

the 2 things they did absolutely awesomely however (like all Ace Combat games) and was greatly lacking in HAWX, were:
1. plane models... attention to detail, with weapons bay, etc are just amazing
2. the measurement of altitude and speed and the feel of it... HAWX was COMPLETELY OFF... 200km/h felt like 20... and Sears Tower in Chicago was 800m tall!? lol... the Burj Dubai was ~600m... which is correct... and it FELT tall... in HAWX, flying at below 100m, you'd hit the ground in a split second... in AC:AH, you could fly under 30m with still lots of room... where in HAWX... it's a near-death altitude...

I didn't like how the "impact" just bounces you off with quite a heavy damage though... and the regenerative health... oh well, it DID save me countless times in longer missions... it's not that believable... I'd rather die and retry than have to fly around waiting for health to regenerate...

then there's also the "random" missiles up my tail sometimes that are impossible to avoid... but it's okay... my health regenerates >.>

then the mission locations were more or less a direct rip off from HAWX(2)... Africa and rebels, oil field, Miami (vs Rio... large bay, beaches, etc) Dubai (vs Chicago, tall buildings, next to large expanse of water) Washington DC, Moscow... then the massive ocean... vs HAWX's Bering Straight...

then there's also the whole war against Russia being overdone... but that can't be helped because the 2 main countries with the most advanced jets are the US and Russia... so it's only natural when it comes to modern aerial combat games

I haven't played multiplayer yet so I don't have an opinion on that part, but for singleplayer, I'd give it an 8/10... (HAWX would be 8-8.5/10 while HAWX2 a measly 6/10)
