Have an interesting HDD setup, looking for help.

Hi guys,

I have a somewhat weird setup but am sure that the pros on here will know how to solve my issue.

I have 2 1TB Samsung F3's in my system that are used to hold my storage (docs, media, etc) and then I have a 128GB SSD boot drive for Win7. My 2x 1TB Samsungs are not in a RAID setup right now, but have Windows7's fake-raid "spanned volume" setup on them so that the two drives show up as one drive letter. I thought that this setup would give me speeds roughly equivalent to the speeds my motherboard's RAID0 setup gives me, but it doesn't -- in fact the speeds are half that of the RAID0 setup.

Because of this, I want to switch those two drives from a Win7 spanned volume to a RAID0 motherboard setup. I do have backup drives and have a backup of all my data so thats not an issue.

What is an issue is that I have moved the default location all of my Win7 User folders (My Documents, My Pictures, My Videos, My Music, etc) over to the two-drive spanned volume.

What is the best way for me to switch the spanned volume in Win7 to the motherboard controlled RAID0 setup?

Should I just break the spanned volume, format the drives, then reboot and switch to RAID0 in my motherboard and then restore those files from backup? Will loading into Win7 without my User directories being there mess anything up?

Or should I just nuke both the OS on the SSD and the storage on the 2x1TB drives and restore from an image? One thing though is that the image was made when the drives were in spanned volume mode.

Thank you guys. Sorry for the long read!

I would just back up the drives, and make the new raid array. Then load up windows like normal, it may take a little longer at boot at first.

But how did you move the files exactly? Did you just change teh location in properties or did you do the registry crap? Also is the appdata folder on there too?

If you did that I would just reinstall windows too.

Hey Sean

I moved the location in each folder's properties and then made a symbolic link (junction) from C:\\Users\\Me\\ to D:\\Users\\Me\\ for each of the folders. Didn't do any registry hacking. So just wipe the disks, setup the raid in BIOS, boot into windows and copy back all the stuff?

yep! Should be simple enough. That is kind of how I have mine set up, though I don't use RAID myself, I just leave both disks separate and use robocopy to mirror my first drive to the second. You can try that if you want, look in my sig at the tut.

Are you comparing a spanned volume to a striped volume and expecting similar performance?

Haha, good eye. Yes I was, and I did realize the error of my ways when I started formatting the drive. I am now trying a Win7 Striped setup between the two disks and will test how much slower/faster it is compared to my onboard controller's RAID0 setup.

A program like teracopy will help if you have to manually move 'em.

Eww, teracopy sucks...at least it does for me and my friend, it slows down the copy process

Good stuff.

The 'onboard RAID' does the same thing Windows RAID does - offload to the CPU. In addition, RAID 0 has very little overhead.
