What 6950 unlocks? Risks?

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
After reading so much about 560 ti 2gb vs 6950 2gb, and seeing a lot of people recommend the 6950 over the 560 ti, I am starting to looking at 6950's for my next GPU purchase.

For reference, this is the 560 ti I was/am looking at:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127608

Ok, so if I do go the 6950 route, I would prefer if it unlocks to a 6970. I know there is no real way to tell if it will, or it won't, but which brand has the best chance on unlocking?

Also, what about risks? Does it void the warranty? Does it run at higher temps?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I plan to crossfire/SLI whatever card I get, but it won't be for quite some time. If I unlock a 6950 and buy another one a year later, and it doesn't unlock, will I have to run just 2x 6950's?

You COULD try a search on the ATI forum I've answered this MANY times over there

No one has any way of getting any proper statistics for this sort of thing.
You can probably get personal, subjective experiences, or perhaps an old list of a few dozen unlock attempts. However, this isn't really an adequate sample size in the face of the thousands of shipped cards on the market.

Higher temperatures, higher power consumption, and possibly greater noise as a result of the higher temperatures.

Yes, it voids most warranties, just like overclocking. However, some people overclock anyway, and return their product to factory condition should the need arise. *hint hint*

You can Xfire a 6950 with a 6970. The 6970 will just clock down to 6950 speeds.

If you have a bios switch i don't think it voids your warranty at all.

risk? unlocking is just basically Overclocking so same risk as overclocking.

and its all luck of the draw. you can get lucky and get a perfectly fine 6970 that was just downclocked to become a 6950

some third party cards do not unlock, some ppl say newer ones do not unlock. I would try and go for a reference card. most do unlock. if it does not or it does with errors, then either keep it as a 6950 or ****** and get another. I have 3 6950s in CFX unlocked overclocked wc etc, and there pretty good.

Reading reviews, it looks like this card has the potential to unlock:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102929

Out of stock at the moment, but I plan to wait until Black Friday to purchase a new GPU anyway.

I don't think so ... the FLEX doesn't have the dual BIOS switch that I recall.

Thanks for the help LA Kings Fan, definitley +Rep.

Like I said, I will be waiting till Black Friday to make a purchase, so if I can afford a 6970, I will just buy that.

If not, I will pick up a Toxic 6950, or more likely a Twin Frozr III (I like the look of that model a lot better).

Even if I get a card that can't be unlocked, I can always OC it up to a 6970.

Much thanks.

Welcome

Yeah good card the MSI ...
Order in which I would suggest considering buying, though the TOXIC is getting harder to find and more expensive as a result, but ...

- Sapphire TOXIC editon {BEST chance to UnLock / has DUAL BIOS switch}
- MSI PE/OC TwinFrozr3 {VERY GOOD chance to UnLock / has DUAL BIOS switch}
- Sapphire DIRT3 editon {FAIR/GOOD chance to UnLock / has DUAL BIOS switch}
- ASUS EAH6950 2GB DCII/2DI4S/2GD5 (NO Asus card has the Dual Bios switch, but card can be UnLocked via a HARD FLASH w/o too much trouble Asus 6970 Bios is out on the web)
- PowerColor / XFX / HIS, etc. cards {FAIR/POOR chance to UnLock / must buy DUAL BIOS switch cards ONLY!}

considering you won't find a new REF card anymore, unless you buy a USED one.

Just last week (Oct. 5, 2011) I bought my current 6950 in my SIG Rig. It is known to come pre-unlocked (The card comes with a very small hidden BIOS switch, where if you switch it and then reboot up, it is already unlocked for you.) from Sapphire from my judgement, although this doesn't necessarily guarantee your card will be the same as mine and a few other people, it's always worth a try. This card is also on a hell of a good bargain too right now, 249.99(after rebate) with 3 free games. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...002&CatId=7005

Here is a video for proof:

*Read the comments/description.*

A picture of my current clocks, and shaders.

*PS* You may want to read these threads, as it may be of help to you. http://www.overclock.net/online-deal...-6950-2gb.html

Last but not least here is picture for the BIOS switch on the card.
