2.4ghz versus 5.0ghz wireless

I'm trying to decide if I should keep my current simultaneous dual band router or ditch it for a much less costly dual band router that is not simultaneous.

Can anyone offer advice on software to test the varying transmission speeds? Is something like Speedtest enough? I assumed that had other possible issues with the ISP itself, but am not certain about anything with networking.

iperf ver 1.7 for windows. There are newer linux versions.
