Upgrade to 3GB GTX 580 or wait for Kepler? - Page 3

I was wondering this but in the end I decided on a cheaper card with better cooling that'll hold me until larger memory is really necessary.

What would be nice in the future is graphic cards that allow you to upgrade memory.
How hard can that me to implement?

I didn't put thousands of dollars into this machine to play at sub-1080p resolutions or to throttle back graphical settings.

Although I'm yet to experience any problems whatsoever playing even Crysis 2, Witcher 2 and the like maxed out, I'm worried that with the release of Skyrim, BF3, etc., I'm going to be looking at unacceptable framerate drops from my usual 80+ down to like 15FPS every 5 minutes because the cards run out of available vram. Those bloody 3GB cards weren't even available when I built my rig. I feel totally betrayed!

So, I'm at the point where I'm considering selling my two Asus GTX 580 reference cards and buying two EVGA (ew, blue) 3GBers. However, Kepler seems right around the corner... (Next 6-9 months)

Should I go for the 3GB GTX 580s and skip Kepler, or keep my current and jump on the Kepler wagon?

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Where'd you spend the other 2000 on that machine?

System proper plus the cost of shipping and various duty/brokerage fees for parts coming from the USA, custom air filters, custom side panel, custom HDD cage, custom fans, keyboard, mouse, mousepad, earphones, speakers, monitor all in Canadian prices. Came to $3,877.34 to the penny. Things are expensive up here.

I always have a ripping good laugh at the naivete of Yanks thinking everything costs the same, in the same money, everywhere, all the time.

Truth is a lot of games VRAM usage is not truly accurate, in most cases it's buffered memory that gives the impression it's using a lot more than it is.

Like others have said if you've yet to experience any VRAM shortage you probably never will, 1200p isn't high enough to cause issues to 1.5GB of memory, around 1600p and beyond you certainly would.

do not upgrade.

Yes, yes, we've all heard that people are detecting their vram usage above 1.5gb, even on a single monitor, but like the other dude said some of that is buffered so it's not truely accurate. The 3gb cards are ONLY useful if your gaming at a resolution higher than 1920x1080, which you aren't. So this answer is simple. Even if you want to 'future proof'. By the time games truely utilize more than 1.5gb at 1920x1080 and below, you'll need a card more powerful than the 580.

6xx is just a Fermi die shrink. If you are really waiting for Kepler, then you're going to be waiting for the 7xx series.

DO NOT WAIT FOR KEPLER. Wait for marswell.

That's going to make a considerable difference from a 580. Marswell will come out 2013 - 2014 so till then you have plenty of time for doing sli of 2 580's.

if your worried about 1.5gigs and loosing cash...you can get 2x 6970's....youll perform a bit less but you wont be limit with ram and you probably wont loose any cash? (atleast not in cash terms)
