Gaming computer build, ~$1400 budget

Thread Starter
I'm new to building computers, but with the help of a few friends I've managed to come up with a build. I'm not sure if what I've got is any good, though.

I'm building a gaming computer so I can play Skyrim (and Oblivion while I wait for Skyrim) on crazy max graphics with lots of stupid graphic enhancing mods installed. My budget is around $1400, but I'd like to spend less then that if I can. It sometimes gets pretty hot down in Melbourne during the summer, so I'm not so keen on overclocking (something I'll consider during the winter).

I'm currently planning to purchase all my hardware from centrecom.com.au (only because of convenience) - if anyone else knows of any good Australian sites to buy from, it would be appreciated.

This is what I've got so far:

GPU:
$588.00 - Gainward nVidia GTX 580 3G Phantom 3GB
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/...9.html?sort=2a

CPU:
$227.00 - Intel CPU Core i5-2500K - LGA 1155
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/...1.html?sort=3a

Motherboard:
$137.50 - Asus P8P67-LE v3 Intel Mainboard (B3 Stepping)
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/...4.html?sort=3a

Memory:
$57.20 - G.SKILL DDR3 8GB (2 X 4GB) PC-10666/1333 F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL Ram
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/...0.html?sort=3a

Case:
$114.40 - Cooler Master RC-692
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/...8.html?sort=3a

Heat sink:
$32.00 - CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/...7.html?sort=3a

Power supply:
$143.00 - Corsair HX-650
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/...1.html?sort=3a

HDD (RAID 0):
2 x $58.00 - Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/...2.html?sort=3a

TOTAL: $1415.10

Is this any good? Suggestions?

Thanks

I'd personally bump the power supply to an 850 watt Corsair just in case you ever wanna run sli in the future.

I don't plan to run SLI ever. Are my choices still good?

I would go ssd rather than 2 hdd in raid 0 for a boot drive.

Also, what resolution are you playing at? That 3gb 580 might be a bit overkill for 1080p.

Even with mods, Oblivion is a bit of an older game, and skyrim is looking to be a console port, I think.
get WDD blacks, not blues.

and what do you have for monitors? 3 GB is unnecessary unless you have a large resolution.

Yeah, i agree. You could save some money with a 1.5gig card. Then put some of it into a SSD.

Get the 1,5GB card and get a better motherboard and cooler. Think regular P8P67 or an MSI P67 board (VERY GOOD bang for the buck) and Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B.

I agree with the other guys, the 3GB isn't unnecessary at 1080p. Go down to a normal one or even a GTX 570 then beef up your storage and if you want you could maybe go with an i7....

Don't recognize your case.
Maybe get the Storm Scout or HAF 912.
They're pretty popular on this forum.

GPU: - Much to expensive for a unknown name, I ASUS or MSI or EVGA would be much better

CPU: - Great

Motherboard: - If you plan on Oc'in anything i would invest in a better board
a ASUS Z68 PRO or a P67 Deluxe

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131730
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131701

Memory: - 1333 is wayy to slow for your build bump it up to 1600 or 1866 at least

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231460
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231445

Case: - What ever you want, just make sure it can fit the CPU cooler and the GPU's, in which it will

Heat sink: - Great

Power supply: - Great, more then enough for a single 580

HDD (RAID 0): - NONONONONONO i cannot stress this enough

1) 1 red flag, these WD are not RE (Raid edition) drives and will give you nightmares in RAID 0

2) Raid 0 with SATA II is hardly noticeable, please take my word for it, i had 3 F3 (500gb) in a RAID 0 and it was a mess.

So either get a SDD drive (crucial M4) or just get a single drive a Samsung F3 1TB

I understand you cant use newegg, but just use it as a reference
