[Official] AMD Bulldozer Reviews Thread - Page 107

Said it before and I'll say it again: Bulldozer = fail of epic proportions. Judging by the core for core performance, it feels like they duct-taped Pentium 4 cores together, and seeing it fail to previous gen X4 Phenom II CPU which had half the core count, was beyond a joke. This is a several thousand times bigger fail than their Phenom 1's ever were, and more worse than I thought it could ever be. After all those pholosophical theory posts by whom AMD fans consider "prophet" John (from whom we won't be seeing any more hype threads/posts I bet), we get an 8 core Pentium 4. Now where are all the quotes of people saying "BD will be the fastest CPU out" to make them eat those words, after the thousands of flameposts made here by most of them?

I kind of saw it coming anyways. FX name to signify core performance of 2003, biscuit tin packaging to signify the metaphor that it'll get eaten for breakfast performance-wise. If this is the best you can do AMD, after over half a decade of research & development, save yourselves the billions in cash and forget making/designing any more x86 CPUs (and spend it on developing/designing your GPUs).

This is not an error. This is a bad design implementation on Bulldozer that AMD wants OS vendors to hack around.

Linus Torvalds commented "Argh. This is a small disaster, you know that, right?... I'd be really worried. Changing address space layout is not a small decision."

Why is this review:
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/review...roduction.html

Scoring so much better than the rest?

It's actually beating a 2600k in MANY tests in that review, and if not beating...matching. I'd definitely buy an 8150 if it can actually produce that level of performance....

edit: and the power usage isn't fermi like either =o

From the looks of it there might actually be bottle necks INSIDE the cpu its self, though. When these bottle necks don't matter...then it does OK. When they do matter it does horrible.

This is what we get with AMD's hush-hush nonsense.

Arg...I hate to say it, but I think some more time is need to know for sure. Though my guess is that any benchmark software not fully utilizing Bulldozer based CPUs will have a new version out by this weekend.

If AMD releases a special driver fix for Catalyst to make it perform better I think I might have go down to AMD corporate and start slapping people...they've had plenty of time to make Catalyst make good use of Bulldozer.
In the end, im kinda happy. if BD was what everyone thought it to be(the new king cpu) i would a had to upgrade from my 2500k that runs perfectly. so this is kinda a blessing in disguise lol. at least now i have more time to put some $ together and upgrade my GPU which is killing me...even on 1600x1200 on a 15" crt it lags like crazy in alot of games.

I assume you have a background in OS development that would qualify you to make such a comment. If so, let me know how easy it is to solve the aforementioned error. I'm waiting.

To be fair, using an unscripted play through from a multiplayer game is a piss poor benchmark. There are to many variables that could happen from one run to another.

Windows 7 SP2 coming soon?

Kind of like AVX support was added in SP1.

Found another review from The Netherlands. They compared the other FX versions also.

I'm confused. I'm assuming AMD would have a fleet of test systems for development, many of them running Windows 7, right? Again I ask, how were they able to develop BD properly on an OS with unoptimized schedulers? BD has been in development since long before Windows 7 was released, right? I don't see how they were able to do this and worry about fixing it later. Additionally if that were true I would expect the hotfix from MS to have been rolled out prior to the BD release. It'd be monumentally stupid not to.
