Yes and no. You can disable modules to get higher clock speed, but the gains will be marginal. The 8+GHz world record was set on 1 active module. The problem with this route is that you take away BDs seemingly only advantage (core count) and are left with all of its drawbacks. Paying for an 8 core and turning it into a sub par quad core for MORE than other available stronger quad cores? No thanks.


There was a rumor about people being able to disable single integer cores so that the module is left with the FPU and a single integer core. Do this to each module and you are left with a single integer core and FPU per module without the shared resources and a beefed up FPU. I haven't followed up on it though, maybe someone else can comment.

Each module consists of 2 integer cores, a floating point unit, and shared L2 cache. The poor per-core performance we've seen suggests that each integer core may be crippled by having to share resources with with the 2nd core. If we could disable one integer core in each module, per-core performance might improve.

I'm really just speculating, though. A main point in the Bulldozer architecture was that each integer core won't be severely hindered by its counterpart since they have dedicated integer schedulers and execution pipelines. I guess we'll see once more enthusiasts get their hands on it.

interesting. ill wait to see more in depth testing with the BD. surely cant justify picking one up to test when overall performance out of the box is comparable to its predecessors.

Would all of you all buy it ? in my case ? i have Gigabyte 970A-UD3 (excellent board, i will never buy expensive boards since i dont really like xfire/sli) and ATHLON x3 450 @ B50 3.9 Ghz + GTX460 OC (still very good card) 100% load it takes around 250W (playing assasin creed brotherhood). Im scared about bulldozer power usage .Maybe FX-4170 or Fx-6100. I see them available here FX-8150 250$, 2600k almost 450$. When i compare my old athlon (its like Bear Grylls, went throught alot ) to FXs i see almost no difference in gaming. Do u think it will be good for feature or its simply bad architecture and never will show anything better ?

Stick with your Rana chip at least until we see what Piledriver brings. Like you said, your CPU is not significantly slower than BD for gaming.

if turning the 8150 into a quad core does indeed increase its performance then this feels just like the x2 555 calisto core that unlocks into a quad lol Amd failed again now we have to disable instead of unlock
