I was going to take some money out of my X79 fund to play with Bulldozer but its not worth buying even over a Phenom II

What a Joke!

As for the performance, it's not that bad, I also think some software fixes/patches/updates to Windows scheduler will provide some (albeit very small) boosts. The only thing I find completely unacceptable is the power consumption, especially overclocked.
It's completely relevant from a consumer point of view though.

Why would someone 'upgrade' to BD, when their Phenom II performs pretty much on par?

BD should have been kicking Phenom II to touch, unfortunately, in most tasks, it just doesn't.

As irrelevant as some might say this is - game performance is a HUGE let down with BD. This shows up huge inneficiencies in architecture, and shows they may have really dropped the ball on integer performance.

Sure, FP performance is pretty good (as can be seen with the encoding performance and compression / decompression), but AMD are relying too heavily on an industry to move to multi-core aware software, but there just isn;t enough uptake on the average PC to make software developers really push this side of things.

If every main street PC came equipped with a quad core, this might be different. I feel AMD were hoping for software to be 5 years ahead of where it actually is.

Power consumption is another issue - they are not going to win any server contracts with Zambesi based CPU's.

It seems than i5 2500 is better overall than FX-8150, cheaper and less power hungry

That wasn't my point.

I don't think the BD is a total dog but its hard to see a reason to buy one.
Well said!!

You know how AMD has multiple CPU divisions?
Seems to me that the BD division was competing with the Thuban/Deneb division.

+rep

Maybe we're going to see the Phenom division coming up with a Phenom III, that's just a tweaked K10.5 core on 32nm, but still owns Bulldozer
